FSU drug the best defense we have ever had

Oct 16, 2022, 12:20 AM

down the field for over two 90 yard drives. Glad these avengers are taking care of business. I’ll take the power rangers any day. Lack leadership. Wilkins would not let that happen to his group. The back ups are making more plays than the starters. I think starters are counting their NFL money to early.

They are doing better than most other D's around the country. And BTW, the basketball team sucks.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Doing better than most other defenses?!?

Oct 16, 2022, 1:01 AM

How do you figure that?

Going into tonight’s game, we were 23rd in total yards given up per game, 24th in scoring defense, and 85th in passing yards allowed per game.

With all of the future NFL talent on our defense, the performance so far is very underwhelming.

Based on our talent level we should easily be a top 10 defense, if not top 5.

Stop being such a homer.

If we are ranked 23rd and 24th in a division that has over 100 teams, that would quite literally be the definition of better than most.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

So now we are comparing ourselves against every other FBS team?

Oct 16, 2022, 12:55 PM

I thought we were comparing ourselves to other power 5 teams with similar resources and preseason expectations.

So you’re good barley being a top 25 defense in points allowed, and being in the bottom half of FBS in passing defense?

To answer your question

Oct 16, 2022, 7:50 AM [ in reply to Again, what are Goodwin’s and Conn’s qualifications to be our DCs? ]

Because Dabo offered them the job. It is his sword to die on. It is honestly not his problem if we do not like the hires. CDS has fired coordinators before. He will fire these two if they do not get the job done.

CDS has rebuilt the monster that is Clemson football. He had the vision and begged the athletic department for improvements. This monster in turn keeps Clemson athletics and the town of Clemson going. There was a study out a handful of years ago about the impact that Dabo has on the Clemson economy. The university and town are getting their money’s worth with him. CDS has the head coaching job until he no longer wants it. So love him, hate him, or do not care. He is not going anywhere anytime soon.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I love the Goodwin and Conn qualification questions.

Oct 16, 2022, 1:18 PM [ in reply to Again, what are Goodwin’s and Conn’s qualifications to be our DCs? ]

because you aren't really questioning the qualification of these two to be DC's. You are questioning Dabo's qualification to be head coach.

Do you want a list to answer THAT question?

Re: FSU drug the best defense we have ever had

Oct 16, 2022, 2:57 AM

How is this the best defense we've ever had? We're #24 scoring, #23 total, #2 rushing, and #94 passing defense. We'll be lower in all those tomorrow.

In 2018, we were #1 scoring, #6 total, #1 rushing, and #24 passing. In 2017, we were #2 scoring, #4 total, #12 rushing, and #4 passing. Just last year, we were #2 scoring, #8 total, #7 rushing, and #33 passing.

You could easily make an argument that this is our worst defense since 2013.

But also, it happens. I do think we've had a tendency to let off the gas for a few years now. But even the 2018 squad allowed like 500 passing yards to SC.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Not even close to our best D ever! Good grief.***

Re: FSU drug the best defense we have ever had

Oct 16, 2022, 8:43 AM

It's my belief these exceptional athletes we have at linebacker aren't as aggressive or tenacious as Boulware and Skalski. It seems our second level isn't nearly as resistant as those teams were with those linebacker leaders. I'm not suggesting that Simpson, Benltley and company aren't talented, I'm just saying they seem our porous, less resistant to inside runs, and are seen chasing backs from behind more often than they are crushing them face on. Maybe it's all schematic and they are where they need to be based on coach demands, but I don't have confidence in this group like I did with Skalski and Spector in the middle.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Still a work in progress, but the weakness this year is

Oct 16, 2022, 8:46 AM

With the DBs especially the safety’s. If the corners are strong, then the safety’s can come up for run support. But with weaker backend, they play further off the line and not able to attack.
They are getting better.

Re: FSU drug the best defense we have ever had

Oct 17, 2022, 5:29 PM

I believe if most folks were honest, they’d admit their somewhat surprised at how this defense has under performed, specifically the d- line. The CB’s have had a tremendous amount of injuries, and Coach Reed didn’t forget how to coach during the offseason, so I fully understand those issues. However the guys up front seem to at times have motivation issues, which definitely separates them from past defensive lines. Not sure if it’s communication issue with the new d-line coach and they just aren’t responding to him the way they did with Coach Bates, or if it’s Goodwin and his 180 degree on field demeanor as opposed to Coach V. Either way, it’ll cost Clemson at some point if it’s not figured out
