Swinney talks about faking injuries and Clemson's health in Sunday media call

Clemson head coach Dabo Swinney said the Tigers were as healthy as could be expected after a physical game against Georgia. What does he say about Jordan Leggett and Mackensie Alexander? What does he say about the clip that purports to show Georgia players faking injury? Full Story »

The difference between LSU doing it and UGA doing it was how it affected our offense. When LSU did it, it was on some crucial, late-game drives, and their "injuries" actually kind of gave us some extra time outs to talk about what we wanted to do. Wasn't mad at them nearly as much as UGAy, who could not have faked any more obviously than they did, when they flopped in the middle of first half drives against us to intentionally kill our momentum. It makes me sick. They might as well hold a press conference and say, "We are physically incapable of keeping up with Clemson from a physical standpoint."

If they're worried enough about the tempo to fake injuries and spend time at practice devising plans and signals to do so- we are in their heads- and we've already won. In my opinion that kind of tactic is a waste of time and indicates that the coaches and players either can't figure out how to stop us, or haven't put the work in during the off season to get in good enough shape...

It does mess up our tempo some, though.

ABSOLUTELY NOT!!!!!!!!the play should should continue @ the normal pace!!one of the advantages of fast play is to wear-out the other teams Def..it will be ILLEGAL SOON!! it is highly unethical @ best now!! I thought the dawg coach was a more honest man than to allow this!!

Georgia and Most of SEC "Bush League"

Sep 1, 2013, 9:16 PM

Georgia and the SEC stands for cheating, thugishness, poor sportsmanship, etc--everything that today's media likes to hold up as a role model. I am never surprised at what these teams do--I am somewhat surprised that they consistently get away with it. Also, hats off to Bush League coach Mark Richt who, like the holier than thou Lou Holtz let their teams come over to the bottom of the hill to diss Clemson's tradition of Running Down the Hill. No Class--and don't tell me that the coach cannot control this by his team.

Re: Georgia and Most of SEC "Bush League"

You are all over it. He talks the talk, but he doesn't walk the walk of a sportsman, a moral man, or a great example of a leader in so many ways IMO. Sadly, he doesn't have to be that kind of guy. They have plenty of talent, great facilities, a rabid fan base, plenty of money. He should be able to succeed without the shenanigans.

Lack of class can be hidden for just so long before it is exposed. It didn't take long before it came out in MR and his team (re: UF game several years ago when MR supported the thuggery even knowing the team would be penalized for it). It also comes out in the lack of character his players so regularly demonstrate.

Our staff controls what goes on in our stadium. We should make the opponents come out first and get on the sideline.

But they do need to do something to control the flow

Anyone remember a few years ago when Richt had the entire team "rush" the endzone to celebrate a TD? He said he didn't care about being penalized and I have no doubt he told them to go to the bottom of the hill either.

@ Cal, NWU players faked injuries & didn't even see trainer!

Sep 1, 2013, 10:46 PM

Cal's new coach, Sonny Dykes (who runs a HUNH that you may remember seeing him run at LaTech last season) was visibly disgusted at the numerous fake injuries. The sideline reporter said that the "injured" players were coming off the field and not even seeing the trainer. Unsportsmanlike wimps.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: @ Cal, NWU players faked injuries & didn't even see trainer!

Sep 1, 2013, 11:51 PM

I believe we need a rules change that says an injured player who leaves the filed must stay off until a change of possession. That would at least force them to use 2nd team players to fake injuries, which would make it even more obvious as to what they are doing. Eventually this will all come back to haunt the teams doing the faking.
What university is going to want their team known for playing bush league ball?!
They are just openly admitting that they can't compete with HUNU teams playing by the rules and that they have to cheat.

Good idea, but it probably won't be considered, because it would be even more for the officials to have to keep up with.

You are all over it on this one, Razz. It would be nice for the NCAA officiating body to send out a memo instructing ref's to caution players of time outs for fake claims. Ref's have a way of getting even when they want as in some of the obvious "make up" calls that occur after a bad flag.

What message are these coaches sending young athletes, "do whatever it takes to win or get what you want regardless of the ethics"? Great, that's exactly what this culture needs, more citizens "gaming" the system to get a free ride!! Looks like the "Culture de jour" is invading College Football. Either flag the behavior or change the rules and let the defense sub, but this is ridiculous, pathetic, and destroys the integrity of the game!!

Dawgs: Cheaters, Classless, and LOSERS Report that ESPN

Sep 2, 2013, 9:29 AM

Let them act like thugs at the bottom of the hill requiring our coaches to keep them back from players run off area, let them receive orders from their coaches to fake injuries and fall to the ground because they can't handle our offense and need to cheat, but most importantly that is the difference between winners and losers and Clemson is definitely the winner here! Dawgs, SEC, and NCAA who does not address this are the losers. Like Dabo says grab some "ethics" and try to win the game by your effort not what you try to fake. Sorry Dawgs once again no respect for you as always.

until the end of the QTR or 10 mins of play time!! that way U can tell when he is really hurt.. of courSe those UNETHICAL COACHES ( the entire SEC) will just send in a third team gut to flop!!it will take the Presidents of the offending colleges to stop this practice.. coaches will not stop it until then

We do Chicken right...it's not just for frying anymore!

Here's what rulebook says

Sep 2, 2013, 1:28 PM [ in reply to I am watching rerun ]

"Feigning an injury for any reason is unethical. An injured player must
be given full protection under the rules, but feigning injury is dishonest,
unsportsmanlike and contrary to the spirit of the rules. Such tactics
cannot be tolerated among sportsmen of integrity."

So it's sort of against the rules, but there's no punishment listed because it's hard to know for sure if a player is faking.
Like others are saying, there needs to more of a deterrent than sitting out 1 play. I'd say sit out a half, with the option of taking a 5-yard penalty instead. Offensive players used to fake injuries late in the game to stop the clock, so they added the 10-second runoff rule and you don't see those injuries anymore.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Here's what rulebook says

Sep 2, 2013, 3:37 PM

1) For in-conference games have league officials review game footage and hand out post-game un-sportsman-like penalties.... resulting in some type of limited player AND coach suspensions....

2) For OOC games use "neutral" officials....
