Swinney not pleased with "romper room" boxing match in locker room

Clemson head coach Dabo Swinney likes Clemson’s new football operations center, and he’s disappointed that a couple of walk-ons decided to treat it like romper room. Full Story »

Yeah, I remember Johnstone ledge races in F section. Thank God for the bush below my 4th floor room.

huge deal to me when I first heard about it, but I have to wonder, "Why are a pair of boxing gloves lying around?" Did the guys just bring them there on their own? Based on Dabo's response, he seemed to believe the gloves shouldn't be there (or else he shouldn't be surprised guys are going to try them out).

Dabo and the coaches gave the Cornerbacks and Safeties boxing gloves to use in practice. They got the idea fro the Patriots training camp.

The idea is that, when you are practicing covering a WR, you put boxing gloves on your CBs and Safeties to teach them not to get handsy and grab a WR. A lot of cornerbacks will "cheat" in coverage and grab onto a WR to maintain coverage, this creates pass interference penalties. By putting boxing gloves on, the DBs wont grab and are forced to learn how to beat a WR with their feet and eyes, reducing pass interference calls and making them more skilled at coverage.

The DB's have been using boxing gloves in practice to reduce pass interference penalties.

Dabo has been too friendly with Spurrier lately.

That's worse!!! It looked like the video shows one guy recording/filming it on his phone, and there probably were others. Also, it looks like it was taken in the new facility, so it couldn't be that old. I will say from past experience that players do get into it from time to time. I have seen it on several occasions myself, and I remember when Guillermo and Pagano went at it a couple of years ago, and Jay spent time recovering from it. It happens, but sometimes it clears the air.

The story is completely backwards

Oct 24, 2017, 1:58 PM

who cares if players/kids/young adults want to "box" a little and generally do stupid things. Thats pretty much the definition of being a male under the age of 25.

The bigger deal is why do folks feel the need to video everything? It looked like there were 4 folks filming the whole thing. By god, thats your lockerroom, you don't need to film and post anything that happens in there for the world to see.

I'm certainly glad that camera phones weren't around when I was in college!

Just amazing how some people throw common sense and adult judgment out the window because of social media.

Question for most of you males

Oct 24, 2017, 2:17 PM

Did you ever have boxing gloves when you were younger? I did, and so did a few other guys on the street. So we staged a boxing championship. What else are you supposed to do with boxing gloves? Garden?

No argument that it is stupid and shouldn't happen, so remove the boxing gloves from the facility. Problem solved.

Can anyone identify who these two boxing are? He said walk-ons so that narrows it down but the one getting hit looks Pat Godfrey. Can't tell who the other one is.

Oct 24, 2017, 3:50 PM

My son is 17 and he has a friend who has been trying to do a back flip for a few weeks now. Thats not the bad part the bad part is all his friends are videoing him trying to do this back flip and every time this kid is landing directly on his head. This isn't a knee slapping "oh that was funny" type of landing on his head this was a "oh my God is this kid alright" type of landing on his head. There are about 4 video's of this kid doing it. I told my son that instead of filming this kid almost break his neck he needs to try and talk this kid out of trying it because he can severely hurt himself including being paralyzed. If he is going to try it he needs the proper measure to insure that when he does land on his head he is landing on something soft or go somewhere where they can teach him how to properly do it. That is the type of stuff kids around that age do. As parents you hate it and hope they would use some common sense but you know the old saying "when the cats away the mice will play".
