new padded helmet protect heads, hurt necks

Aug 3, 2013, 10:05 AM

http://www.theclemsoninsider.com/2013/08/players-are-not-fans-of-new-pads/

Though the extra padding is keeping the players’ heads safe, it is hurting their necks. Watson, Thomas and safety Travis Blanks complained about their neck being sore because of the extra weight on top of the helmet.

Usually, when putting on the helmet for the first time in the summer, players are sore the next day.

“I’m already sore,” Thomas said. “I’m about to get in the training room right now and get some ice put on my neck.”

have you held a helmet or seen their neck muscles? they dont need any building up. I can not believe they could be so heavy as to be a factor. the players dont like them because they dont like change.

Could be, but getting back to wearing a helmet and all the neck bridges does make your neck sore. In the long run it will build up necks even more. Kind of like wearing leg/ankle weights.

It's the player's job to grumble about something. Those are the rules. Just kidding! Getting back to wearing a few extra pounds that you're not used to does, believe it or not, add to the natural soreness you get when you get back in camp. No matter how in shape the players come back, it is the duty of all coaches to push beyond their comfort level. It's just what coaches do. IMO.

the cervical spine twisting and turning under load is generally not the best thing for the neck. As with anything, unintended consequences.

Friction is the problem, not weight (see photo)

Aug 3, 2013, 12:00 PM

It's actually caused by the friction from the material that won't allow the helmet to slide easily along another surface, creating strain on the neck.

There was a trend in helmet manufacturing back in the early 60s where an 8 inch wide padded strip was built into the crest on the plastic as a cushion. Of course when it began to cause neck injuries, they stopped using it.

Exactly what I was thinking. A few more ounces of padding is not going to hurt an athlete's neck as much as the additional torsional forces from the helmet's inability to glance off of other hard surfaces.

Will the soft outer shell create more friction and torque the player’s head and neck upon impact?
This is a common rebuttal based on soft-shell products of the past. POC Ventures has designed against this in the development of the Guardian. We have designed the outer layer out of engineered fabrics with low Coefficient of Friction (0.27u Static and 0.23u Kinetic). The current Polycarbonate shells have a CoF of 0.31u (lower is better). In addition, the Guardian is not permanently attached to the helmet. When you have a glancing hit from another helmet, shoulder pad, ground, etc. the Guardian moves tangentially with the force.
