Fred Cone...

Mar 5, 2020, 5:10 PM

Does anyone know what number Fred Cone wore when he played at Clemson? The only photo I’ve seen of him from possibly the CU days has him wearing #31. Can that be confirmed?

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I watched him play and I’m pretty sure 31 is correct.

Glad I was in the barbershop in 1960 to listen the conversation between Cone and Lowndes Shingler.

Jerry Clower tells the story of Ole
Miss playing Clemson and their All American Fred Cone. Jerry was a DE and Fred got the ball coming around his end. When he got up all he could see was that Number 31 gettin' littler and littler!

Jerry Clower played defensive tackle. The play against Clemson he describes is a bread and butter play of the single wing. The ball is snapped directly to the fullback Who then begins a full spin faking to the tailback going one direction and the pulling wingback going the opposite direction. A pulling guard traps the defensive tackle as the fullback completes the 360 degree spin and goes straight up the hole between guard and tackle created by the pulling guard trapping the DT. Now who can name the two guards on that team for Clemson?

Correct. Ray Clanton and Frank Gillespie - two of Howard's studs!

All the players were great - '48-'50 and on and on!

John-- For many years I have been trying to find someone who can verity a play by Rudy Hayes. I sometimes question my memory but this play is etched in my memory bank so deep I can't erase it.

We were, I believe, playing Maryland. Maryland was defending the East goal. We had stopped them on third down and they were punting. Our returner made no attempt to field the punt and it rolled to A stop about our 15 - 20 yard line. One official and two or three Maryland players were standing near the ball which had never been blown dead. Rudy calmly walked over to the ball, picked it up and started down the field. Rudy was never accused of being a speed merchant but he did make it to about our 40 - 45 yard line. I still get a big laugh when I think of this play.

Are you or anyone out there in radio, TV, Email or internet sports boards land aware of this play?

Way back in the late 1950's, Fred Cone and several other Clemson coaches and I played on the same fast pitch softball team. Charley Waller was also on our team. Later on, Charley was the coach of the Padres pro team for several years.

My brother was lab partner with Fred. At their 50th class reunion they were recalling those early days and
Fred said “ I think I helped you pass that course”. Followed by much laughter.
How I enjoyed seeing him bowl over the defenders and bust through the middle . A fine Country Gentleman.

Fred wore #31 indeed! Even in the pro's.

My favorite player of all time. I got to see him for my first and second year at Clemson. What a power driver!!
