Had a different story for me every time I talked to him.

There'll never be another one like him.

They don't make 'em any more.

He was my dads line coach from 31-33, I can remember seeing him at one of the motels in Clemson during one of dads reunions we were walking down the hall talking to him when Tree Rollins came through and he told him to palm the ceiling in which he did. He gave my dad the nickname (teddy bear). Dad said back then you had to play both ways and if you got hurt during the first half of the game you couldn't go back in till the second half. Playing Tennessee one year dad said he got knocked out well frank brought a bucket of ice water on the field and dumped it on his head and said boy wake yourself up the next play is running your way and we need you to help us out some. I met him several times over the years and he even stayed at our house, I can remember mom making him sit on the back porch when he had a chew in his mouth. What a great man but I know him an dad are in heaven enjoying what the tigers have become....

Coach Howard was truly one of a kind. He always had a way with words. Several things I remember are some of his comments after games. We played Alabama one year at Clemson. We played a great game but came up on the short end. The next day on his show Verner Tate as I remember asked him to sum the game up as he saw it. Coach Howard said well the difference was Alabama kicked three field goals and made two. We kicked three field goals and made one. Then there was the NC State orange shoes game that we won. Buddy Gore caught a pass on the left side of the field and scored from about thirty yards out. On the Sunday show he commented about that play. He said well you know that was a pretty play and I believe that was the first pass ole stone hands ever caught since he has been at Clemson. Then there was the Notre Dame game played at Clemson and again we played a good game but came up short. ON the Sunday show he was asked how he felt about the game. He said I thought we were doing pretty good until they brought this fella called Joe Montana in the game and you know the rest of the story.

Gone but never forgotten!!!

Need to make a correction. The Joe should of been Thiesman instead of Montana.

Joe Montana was the QB in the '77 game. Theismann was a 4th round pick in the '71 draft.

Thanks for the info on the Notre Dame Joes. There were so many tales it is easy to get them mixed up.

You need to slow your roll when it comes to coach Howard. You can't compare today's teams to the teams he had way back then. I've got programs here from 32 & 33 where the heaviest guy on the team was 207 my dad was the 2nd heaviest at 195. No face mask, leather helmets little or no pads at all. Those were the days when men were men, I can remember when my dad was 80 he still had a hand shake that would drop you to your knees. And most of his players never played high school ball (my dads school didn't have a team, he had never seen a game before). Had to hitchhike to Clemson from Marion sc an was seen by a coach an was asked to come play football, he ended up being the alternate captain on the 1933 team, I've got programs with him on the cover. So don't say coach frank wasn't a great coach maybe the greatest in my book compared to what the coaches get out of high school now. Just my opinion

Don't forget

Aug 5, 2017, 12:34 AM

that only 38% of Coach Howard's games he coached in were played at Clemson.

He got a lot of disrespect from the student body at, i believe, hid last tigerama rally. He was booed from the stage. I was there and felt sad about the way he was treated. Bad seasons at the end of a career was not a good ending for Howard as a HC. His so so record against the Coots didn't help much.

My Dad and Frank Howard

Aug 5, 2017, 12:18 AM

My Dad was one of the best triple jumpers at Clemson- I think he was the second track All American. Anyway- he used to mark a spot in the pit (with a hat or something) where his career long was. At one meet he jumped well short of the spot and heard over the PA that he had finished first or broken a Clemson record (imagine watching this reenactment and me telling it on Drunk History). What had happened was: When my dad wasn't looking Howard moved the marker up.

I was a student in the early 80's. A friend of mine's parents had seats in the home club level. They were not able to make it to one game and my friend asked if I wanted to sit up there with him and another friend. Of course, I accepted. Before the game, when we went to get on the elevator to get to the club level, someone yelled " hold that door". It was Coach Howard. We held the door so he could get on. If I remember correctly, he walked with a cane at this time. He got on the elevator and he stood next to me. As the doors closed, he grabbed my arm and said "excuse me son, I need a little steadying"! I said "no problem Coach, glad to help out". I was very excited to meet this living legend!! That was my brush with greatness!

GO TIGERS!!!
