Tree trivia time ... without using any outside resources

Aug 17, 2022, 5:14 PM

The palmetto tree is the state tree for South Carolina.

So, for what reason was the palmetto tree placed on the SC state flag?

And, for extra credit: what does the crescent in the upper corner of the state flag represent? (There is debate but one reason is better than the other.)

And the original SC flag was just the crescent on a blue field.... I should know but I was probably distracted by the little red haired girl sitting in the front row.

We've always had the very best flag, even before the awesome palmetto tree.

Because when the Patriots defended Fort Moultrie on Sullivan Island against the Brits, Fort Moultrie was built from Palmetto logs. The logs absorbed the British canon fire.

But without Sargent Jasper leaping over the edge of the fort under heavy fire to retrieve the flag that was hot down, no one would remember about bouncing cannon balls.

no, they didn't bounce off, they sunk into the soft Palmetto Trees and didn't do any damage

Yes. The debate was that it was originally like a U and, thus the gorget. But, over the years, it got tilted and now claimed to be the crescent moon. I prefer the gorget over the moon.

The cannon balls did not bounce off. They just were absorbed into the soft wood without splintering.

Details, details. Details should never interfere with a good story and cannon balls bouncing off is so much better than "being absorbed due the fibrous nature of the aforementioned tree". ;)

bonus answer. the palm is actually a grass species. the trunk of you have ever tried to chainsaw through one…is made up of millions of fibers. It does not have a rings like a normal tree wood.
