Former Panthers player Captain Munnerlyn accused of assaulting, strangling woman

The 33-year-old is accused of assaulting a woman in Charlotte on Jan. 3.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Former Carolina Panthers cornerback Captain Munnerlyn is accused of assaulting a woman and strangling her.

According to the arrest warrants from the Charlotte Mecklenburg Police Department, the 33-year-old was arrested on Jan. 10 in Lincoln County.

Munnerlyn is accused of assaulting a woman in Charlotte on Jan. 3. The alleged victim had difficulty breathing, bruises and scratches after she said he strangled her, according to the documents. The woman also claimed he kicked her in the face.

He has since gotten out of jail after posting $7,500 bond. He is due back to the Mecklenburg County courthouse on March 1.

Munnerlyn played football for the University of South Carolina before being drafted to the Carolina Panthers. He played for the Panthers from 2009-2013, and then was brought back in 2017. He was then released in 2019, two years into his 4-year $21 million contract.

Channel 9 also learned he was arrested in 2020 in Miami for writing bad checks. Those charges have since been dismissed.

We have reached out to his agent for comment on the charges, but have not heard back at this point.

Character issues that is always talked about as reasons they're not the right players for Clemson, the ones that Dabo refuses to offer, and won't bring into the FB program. This is a sample of what Dabo diligently searches for with hopes of weeding those types of players out before they are ever offered to be a part his FB program. Nobody can say that Dabo hasn't done a very good job at weeding those types of young men away from, and out of his FB program. With Dabo's way of doing thing at Clemson, we hardly ever hear about those types of young men being on our FB program since Dabo became the HC, and if it happens, it's usually long after they have moved on from Clemson...

That is mostly the reason it takes our coaches so long to make offers to guys that most every school in the country is beating their doors down, and Clemson is one of the last programs to make them an offer. This is the exact reason when our coaches offer a player, programs that wasn't even interested in them before, they will come in and make them an offer even when they don't exactly need them until the next season.

But if they are top shelf players that Clemson has offered, they will offer them even if they don't have room for them, to try and stop Clemson from getting them. We see it all the time with a player that has the talent to become a great player, but a program like Bama, or OSU hasn't made them an offer, but as soon as they see that Clemson has offered them, they will step in and offer them, hoping they can keep them away from Clemson if it's possible bc, they don't won't to face them in the playoffs where they usually have to play against Clemson....
