For those who argue ACC men’s basketball is not DOWN

Jun 23, 2021, 9:49 AM

Just read ESPN Mock draft and noticed clear lack of ACC talent.
So, did a little number crunching to see the ACC trend.

2021 Round 1 picks. Projected.
ACC- 3. None in top 5. 1-FSU. 1-Duke (the one that quit team mid season) 1-UVA
SEC- 7
Gonzaga - 2
PAC- 4
Big 12- 6

ACC first round picks - then top 25 final rankings

2011- 5 picks. 7 in final poll
2012 - 8. 6
2013 - 6. 4
2014 - 4. 5
2015 - 7. 6
2016 - 4. 6
2017 - 10. 6
2018 - 6. 5 (Clemson in this one)
2019 - 10. 5
2020 - 3 4
2021 - 3. 3

Final rankings 2021 (coaches).
ACC - 3 (FSU at 10 , and then 24,25) nothing like this in the past 10 years+.
SEC - 2
PAC - 5
Big 12 - 6
Big 10 - 4

Conclusion, ACC used to be the beast, now, going wrong direction.

Lack of talent? Meh, more likely that the blue-blood has whiffed on recent one-and-done talent of late. But that just makes "strength" a year long tend. It swings wildly from there. If anything, you are showing that the one-and-done elite schools are misfiring right now and that does not mean the whole league is down. Really, the mid-upper teams are much more competitive but we are missing that dominant Duke/UNC/PlusOne that goes 14w+ in conference.

Well, keep in mind that individual assessment =/= team strength nor league strength. In addition, there is less "college" talent as international players are also diluting the numbers in the draft - that has been a significant trend. Thus you would see a downward trend for colleges in general.

Nobody will argue that the elite tier of the ACC were down but that isn't all that uncommon. The ACC does have down years. In the past 11 years the ACC had three teams win four championships - not including UofL big least cheat vacated game ... and this is the NORM. The ACC's previous 10 years (00s) also had 3 teams win four championships over 4 years. The heyday of the 90 only saw two teams win 3 championships. 80s saw only 2 teams win two championships.

Duke's 2021 class is absolutely stacked too.

FSU is trending better than blues or UVA now.

College ball will be a mid-major only endeavor pretty soon.
