For the Stat Lovers and Ohio State Lurkers

Dec 19, 2016, 12:47 AM

I was going to break down the numbers...but they speak for themselves. I decided to look at them since on here and on other sites they seem to feel like they have played tougher teams.

The best offense in the Big 10 was Ohio State. After that you have to drop down to 46th to see the next best...which was Michigan. Take away your OOC games and your Big 10 opponents offensive ranking was 77. Take Clemson's OOC games away and our ACC opponents offensive ranking is 61. I'm not knocking their defense but let's be honest here. If you play a bunch of So-So and bad offensive teams...well you'll get nice defensive stats.

This actually doesnt mean anything. Ohio State did not face a real offense in 2014 either. But completely shut down the 3 heisman finalists back to back to back including the winner Marcus Mariota and the explosive Oregon offense. 42-20. You know what speaks for itself? The field... on gameday.

It wasn't mean to mean anything other than to quell the narrative about how "vaunted" y'all Defense is suppose to be and how y'all played all of these "good" teams. Yet meanwhile Clemson allegedly played no one in comparison nor did well verses good defenses.

The fact is...like you said...it will be handled on the field so kill the narrative because we all can find exceptions to the rule. You are bringing up 2014 like it was this season. You also keep forgetting that Clemson isn't Oregon of that year and many members of this year's team will play with a chip on their shoulder because they know how close they came last year. Both teams had some off games, both teams found ways to win, both teams had some very impressive defensive games and both teams had some good offensive games.

Let's be clear this OSU squad is nothing like that 14 team. You think what you want and believe what you will but that 14 team would destroy this current OSU team. And I remember a certain orange bowl a few years back when Clemson had no chance at beating a certain team from up in the dreary ### Midwest. How did that turn out again?

By gameday you mean like 56-7, right?

The Clemson Tigers just need to go out there and shut the critics up.

Total offense and defense are junk stats these days

Dec 19, 2016, 8:31 AM

They don't account for tempo. Getting 500 yards of offense on 60 plays is really good. Getting 500 yards of offense on 100 plays is pretty crappy. Total offense doesn't distinguish between the two.

The Big Ten still plays at a pretty slow tempo compared to a lot of the country. It still wasn't a really offensive league, but Michigan and Penn State were like 25-30 range, not 45-55. Wisconsin was more like mid 50's than 86th, etc.

Good point.

And yes, Ohio State's 2014 championship team would crush this OSU team
