For the sake of discussion is being one of 68

Feb 9, 2021, 8:11 PM

meaningful? 68! If you are 68th getting in to the big dance does that mean you are somebody. Being one of 68 should be a minimum requirement. A more meaningful goal would be consistently in the top 20 or 25. I mean look at the list .... shouldn’t we be consistently as good as the bottom 15 of the top 25?
If you don’t reach for the clouds you will never get off of the ground. Top 20 here we come.....consistently every year.
Go Tigers. Don’t settle for consistent mediocrity.

I remember when the NIT used to be the National Championship tournament. Only 32 teams.... Then the NCAA took over and went to 64 teams, 16 in 4 divisions each. Now it's 68 teams with a few play-in games. Go figure. Television and money rules. I wouldn't be surprised to see the field expanded to maybe 76 teams in the near future. Kinda' like the NFL, a 7-9 team might make the playoff's and have a chance to win the Super Bowl. Not likely, but still a shot.

Go Tigers!!!

Like bowl games. It use to mean something back when there were only 5 major bowls and a few other smaller bowls. Now with 35-40 bowls, teams with losing records having to fill slots. COVID may do us a small favor and wipe out some of these lesser bowls.

Making the NCAA Tournament in basketball is a lot harder

Feb 10, 2021, 4:45 PM

than making a bowl game in football. In football, just being .500 gets you to a bowl, whereas in basketball a .500 record isn't going to get you anywhere close to the NCAA Tournament or even the NIT these days.

I would argue that it's more difficult to make the NCAA Tournament now than it used to be. Not only do you have the automatic bids from lesser conferences taking up a chunk of the 68 NCAA bids, but also a lot of good mid-major programs.

With that said, we should be a perennial NCAA Tournament team. But let's not kid ourselves and make it seem like an easy accomplishment on par with making a bowl in football.

I agree. I would appreciate your thoughts on something i opined earlier....if you look at the bottom 10 or 15 of the top 25 is there anyone there more deserving or capable than we SHOULD be? Thanks.

From my perspective, if you haven't made the field of 68 you stink, or you simply had a bad year.

The top 25-40 PWR-5 programs are shoe-ins for the tournament each year.

Having an expectation is not necessarily a bad thing. We should also realize the expectation you communicated has never been a reality at Clemson for many reasons. So if you adopt an expectation then you need a plan to reach the goal. We see at schools like NCSU, WF and GT that cycling through coaches trying to find the one who can rearrange the deck chairs into the right order does not yield the desired results. We have seen commitment and investment yield results in our football program. The thing is other than whining our fans have little interest in basketball in terms of filling seats or giving money so I will ask what magic solutions you would propose to vault our program into a consistent top 25 team?

Thanks for your comments. I think expectations and execution fall into the area of responsibility of the AD, Pres, and BOD. I am unaware of them having defined an expectation, though they may have. But again, if one looks at the last 15 of the top 25 is there anyone there who deserves that ranking any more that Clemson.
Go Tigers.

Well yes, lots of schools deserve it more than we do

based on our historically crappy support of basketball at Clemson.

Look at how hard it was for Brad to get the new facilities built. He had to go out and basically raise the funds himself for it to happen.

The last time Clemson's AD was in charge of a facility renovation about 20 years ago, we ended up with some cosmetic improvements inside Littlejohn and a "practice facility" that wasn't even a regulation size court.

Almost all of the top 30 basketball programs have a history of supporting basketball. The ones that are also football schools don't view basketball as a second class citizen, but as an important sport that is worth funding well. And fans there don't just view basketball as something to do between football season and spring football practice, but as a great sport worth supporting.

We can get there at Clemson, but our current coach isn't the problem. He's done well despite the foundational problems he's faced.

It's amazing how many fans here think being a yearly top 25 basketball program is easy and that the only reason it hasn't happened is because the administration doesn't care or because we don't have the right coaching.

Try to explain the importance of facilities, paying to hire the right coaches, etc., and it falls on deaf ears. We have seen how vital top assistants and great facilities have been for football, yet it doesn't matter for basketball? Come on.

for a lot of schools, they'll have a better chance of being

one of 68 than being one of 20. I agree that 1 of 20 would mean more but making the NCAAT is a life time memory.

While 68 out of 357 division 1 basketball teams is not as low as the 4 out of 130ish in FBS football, the 20% in college basketball is FAR lower than the percentage rewarded with postseason play in any major professional sport.

I believe it is:

12 teams in baseball (It was 16 last season)
14 teams in football
16 teams in basketball
16 teams in hockey
