Football Tailgating TV options

May 11, 2016, 10:58 AM

I am considering adding a tv to my tailgate this year, and was wondering if anyone has any experience with streaming apple tv (or equivalent) through a phone or tablet hotspot? I realize it would take a large amount of data.

My main other concern is, is a Verizon signal strong enough on a game day in Clemson (I'm in lot 25) to stream video? Has anyone tried this?

My home TV is Att Uverse, and I haven't really found any good options from them, considering it's cable, not satellite. I can't use satellite at my place.

Does anyone have any other decent alternatives to satellite?

If not, what does it cost to add a portable receiver to a satellite plan? My parents have dish and I might could add on to their plan, but I'm not sure if I can add onto it just for football season.

Any info would be appreciated!

Your parents can add a model 211 to their account for $7 per month under a promotion called DISH'n it Up.
Its a new 2 year contract, but the receiver can be installed at their home for free. However, if your parents have DISH's Hopper system, you must purchase a 211 for $75 to $99. If you do this option, you can turn the purchased unit off after football season. The best dish to use with the 211 is DISH's tailgater which finds the signal for you. It costs $349.

He can also purchase dish network automatic satellite dishes

That work on newer receivers, like the ones his parents may already have.

$349 seems high for a tailgater. They are under $200 now I believe.

So if they have Hopper (which I believe they do), I could buy a Dish Tailgater, and a 211 receiver, and then just activate it at $7/month during football season and deactivate it after the season? Essentially, it would be a one-time up-front cost, and then just $7/month for the months I want it? And this would not restart their 2 year contract each time?

Here is an option

Verizon network will be too bogged down on game-day to send a text much less stream video. A good amplified antenna will allow you to get ABC/FOX/CBS/NBC.

Obviously satellite is best but a creative alternative is to buy an HDMI splitter and a wireless HDMI transmitter. You ask a fellow tailgater with tv (within a 50 yard area of you) if you could kindly tap into their signal (beer make everyone friends). The biggest problem with this plan is that you could only watch what they watch but most everyone watches the best game anyway. It is also a little awkward to ask someone to split their signal. I have not tried this at a tailgate but do use this system to watch tv outside at my house.

I really like this idea. I have some friends nearby that typically bring a tv/sat dish for night games. I didn't event think about it that wireless HDMI transmitter existed (although I should have know since that's how uVerse powers other tvs throughout a home).

I'll probably end up going this route with an amplified antenna for more options or if I don't want to watch the same game.

Thanks for the input!

You can get signal on your ATT Uverse App

Not sure how you can hook it up to a TV.

Buy a hdmi cable for your phone. Simple.

May 11, 2016, 11:53 AM

You better have an unlimited data plan.

For power , if you only plan to run a tv, buy portable car battery/jumper . preferbale one with built in dc to ac converter. If not you will need an extra dc to acc converter.

All together. .if you have the data plan. ... you are looking at $150.

I really doubt streaming will be consistent on gameday, otherwise this would be the best option for me.

Can't speak to Dish, but you can add a receiver to a DirectTV plan for $7 per month and turn it off and on during the season. Will cost like $39 upfront for sd box or $99 for hd box as far as a one time lease fee unless upgrading to a new 2 year term. Will need to get the dish for signal, power, etc, which are whole other discussions. Just make sure you set it up beforehand or game day will be frustrating!

Dish or antenna are only options, streaming won't work around the stadium on game day.

Haha, that should do the trick! I'll let Clemson know so they can use it as the backup for the stadium lights in case the power goes out.

Lot of misinformation in this thread. Here's the main thing

May 11, 2016, 12:58 PM

Whatever you hook up to your TV, do it using Monster Cable. I've tried the other brands, and on game days they just don't transmit a clear enough signal for the picture to be crisp and bright. Monster Cable doesn't have that problem because they use 99.9% de-oxygenated copper.

Hope that Helps.

Re: Lot of misinformation in this thread. Here's the main thing

May 11, 2016, 2:34 PM

So, since you clearly work for Monster, can you hook me up with some cables for free?

Jk, but if you're serious about this, how far are you running these HDMI cables? I've never had issues with short cables, but if you are running them distances over 10' then you may not be trolling me.. just curious

I guess it's not set in stone, but I donate way more than the required Champion Level for lot 25, and that was my only request. I've been there the last 2 years, so I don't expect this year to be any different.

Sometimes it is worth paying a little more cash to avoid constant headaches... If you really want reliable tailgating TV then satellite is the way to go. IMO Dish Network has the best tailgating systems ( http://www.gotailgater.com/ ) and they have "pay as you go" programming options or you could add it to your parents current subscription if they are amenable to such a thing.

The folks I tailgate with have the Dish Tailgater system. It sets up quickly and works like a champ - even in the rain.
