Football schools that can play b-ball...

Jan 13, 2022, 5:29 AM

5 of the current top 25 Men's College Basketball teams are football first schools (Auburn, USC, LSU, Ohio St, Alabama). 6 can do both well and have for sustained periods of time (Baylor, Houston, Mich St., Wisconsin, Iowa State, Texas). Not all these teams can compete year after year for the final four in both sports however 5 (Auburn, Alabama, Ohio State, Mich St, and Baylor) compete at a high level in football and have made a commitment to winning in basketball. Its time for a change (has been for a few years). I was at CU 1986-90. 3 of the 4 years we were extremely competitive in BB and FB (we also won a NC in Soccer). Littlejohn, while never really packed, was electric many nights. I realize we will never be a perennial b-ball power, but we stop waiting to catch lightning in a bottle. I am not saying we should hire scum bags and tempt fate with violations, but we are now in a new era where programs can cheat (NIL). The solution is not easy, but it is not good guy brad b. B-Ball is all about the coach (and now NIL). Go get a top guy and pay salary with some of that football money we have been hoarding. No more games like last night...our inconsistency over the past 10-11 years is coaching. We have had good coaches Ellis (maybe a little over rated) Barnes, Purnell. Now I don't know who that coach is and I am not saying the grass is greener, but staying as a perennial 16-15 team with an occasional 23 - 13 job saving season should not be our goal. We settled in football for years until we got a taste of the good life. Its time...Brad has had more than a fair chance...we have payed him well (2.6MM this year...he will land another gig (not a major one).

You got this all wrong. We can play basketball. Only problem is they use nets these days. Maybe if they went back to the old days of using wicker ( peach) baskets we might be able to score.

Basketball can die on the vine as far as I am concerned.

Maybe so but without hoops what are you going to watch on cold snowy weekends like the one they are calling for here this weekend ,unless of course you live on this side of I-85 ; professional golf from sunny Hawaii.

Funny you say that. I am in Ontario Canada for work. Seriously cold and snowy.

However, check out hockey. It is a far better game than basketball....plus it does not have all the woke politics as a distraction. Real men play hockey.

And we could also make a list of basketball schools that can’t play football.

I’ll start the list ……..

1) UNC
2) duke
3) indiana
4) UCLA

Wow another why not us post. How can UCLA, Kansas, Duke and UNC be good at basketball but not football? Why can our soccer team win a national championship but our tennis team sucks? Why do the coots suck in everything but wimmins basketball? Have we learned nothing from WF, GT or Nancy St who have cycled through coaches looking for the one who can push them to the tip only to find less than average success?
Do you not understand that at Clemson there is not an unlimited pot of money so we make sure Football, Soccer, Softball and Golf get the first cut as the ROI is higher for these sports than basketball? Even if we throw money at basketball if we dont play the AAU handler money game we may not see any difference in terms of wins?

For whatever reason it is hard to win at Clemson. We only invest enough in the program to keep it going and our fans dont really support basketball. So a good coach, if they can turn it around, will jump at a better job instead of fight an uphill battle at Clemson. Barnes and OP are prime examples of taking the first train out.

So instead of whining on message boards you should actually go to games and support the team.

Lol. College basketball is the second biggest sport in the NCAA....

By far. Why do you think so many games are televised by the networks? Just another lame excuse...

So what is your plan mr. smart guy? The popularity of the sport has nothing with Clemson's ability to be good at it.

Not sure if this data is correct...Football and Basketball only revenue generating sports at Clemson.

Football is king and should remain king and I am not suggesting we need to go to the final 4 in hoops every year or ever. I believe all coaches deserve a chance and that schools are too quick to let coaches go. That said Brad B. has had his chance and I think it is time to move on. I am sure the UNC and UCLA fans would love for their football teams to be completive. UNC tried with their latest football coach hire in Brown and UCLA brought in a big name in Chip Kelly. They are trying...we should try in basketball.

Johnston D, if I lived near Clemson I would be a basketball season ticket holder. My son is enrolled and he goes to most home games.
