Florida QB Recruiting NIL Drama

5

Jan 12, 2023, 7:26 AM

Check this out. Exactly what Dabo wants to avoid. This is what happens when recruiting and NIL are mixed together. Not a good look for this young man and his family. If you read the comments from the Gator fans you see where this can all go.

I love college football. It’s my only sports passion. But that love is slowly and gradually being chipped away. I’ll be a strong Clemson Tiger fan for a long time, but my interest today is less than it was yesterday and it will be even less in the years to come due to the Portal and NIL.

I have said many times that I could not be a school teacher. Now I would have to add college coach to that list. Having to deal with young men who feel entitled and do not keep their word to a school that they are committed to.
If I was a football coach I would have to skip all of this college drama and coach in the NFL.

the transfer portal and NIL will be the death of college football as we know it, and I suspect a lot of people will become equally disheartened.

Jan 15, 2023, 8:15 AM

To put wha the NIL and portal has done to many of us that are losing our passion for the game.

1. I used to wake up that 1st big Saturday on Labor Day weekend and it was like Christmas. My old friends and roommates from CO were OSU alumni. I remember waking up on those mornings to Hang on Sloopy, a breakfast, a morning breakfast cocktail, and it was football all day for us. Note: we went to the 31-0 beatdown together which was so much fun.

2. This continued probably up to the year before COVID. This is went I felt there was really a turn for me just really being interested in Clemson Football vs the entire sport. I stopped watching all of the pre and post game CFB shows. And really do not lock in to many of the other games. They may be on in the background but I am not a couch potato on Saturday’s outside of Clemson games. Which by the way CFB needs to go to the pro time rules with these games.

3. Overall the overall product is getting diluted with the lack of competition. The rich are really getting richer. Fine if you want 6 fan bases trying to keep your sport afloat, but not for the long term health of the sport. Why do you think the NFL has the rules it does.

Ultimately, fans will start to tune out as many of us are already doing so.

I really hope this blows up and we see more and more of this. At some point soon, I hope a lied to recruit sues the pants off of some collective and the school because the coaches were brokering the deal. That is the only way the NCAA will pursue any time of oversite. Given the legislation, not sure how much the NCAA can legally do but if this needs up going nuclear they will have to do something.

Who knew? Big time college programs, coaches, and donors were far more adept at keeping the payment of players and families quiet and operating smoothly than the young superstar teens and their families?

That’s what I think made our run with Dabo leading the way so much more appealing or gratifying for me. I don’t think he will be able to sustain, as I fear there are far more of this ilk out there than the players that will be attracted by Dabo’s culture.

I’ll always be a Clemson man because I am one of the fortunate ones to have attended Clemson, but my passion for college sports is being dealt the death of a thousand cuts.

play. Look at the class this year and what they are saying, especially the studs who could have played anywhere like Woods. Not all kids are in it for the $$$. Yes, it reduces the recruiting pool somewhat, but kids raised right, with the right priorities are still out there. Those are the kids we're recruiting.

Can it work? We'll see

So you cant be poor and raised right or have the right priorities? People are offering millions of dollars to play college football, if a kid's family is just barely getting by and they take the money that is a problem for you?

Re: This is where our assessment of character comes into

That scenario you present is spun often to tug at one's heart strings as an emotional trigger but it is rarely if ever truly the case-"down at the soup kitchen getting that hearty pregame meal, shirtless and bare foot"-

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: This is where our assessment of character comes into

one does not have to be "down at the soup kitchen" to be in a position that millions of dollars would sway your decision. That is just stupid!

is coming from affluent circumstances. If anyone's top priority is money, their priorities are off. Money can be a factor, but if it's the primary factor, that person is just going to chase it wherever it leads

Re: I doubt most of this freshman class

Jan 12, 2023, 8:18 PM

SO if you grew up eating ramen noodles and someone said hey kid, I'll give you two million dollars to come to X school then they are a problem? Money might not be the top factor but eating well and all of that should be. NO ONE has any idea what these kids and their families go through so to lay a blanket statement down on them is foolish.

Another program or other programs continuing to court this kid after he signed with Florida.

Coaches know if they wait for a quality player to enter the transfer portal before they start recruiting him, they're likely too late.

Since NCAA rules allow for players on opposing teams to talk to one another about transferring, coaches are reaching out to third parties and using players as go-betweens which is, of course, a violation of NCAA rules, but clearly not something that is being enforced.

So what's the next domino to fall in the NCAA rules?

3

Jan 12, 2023, 9:19 AM

From what I understand, once a recruit has signed a National Letter of Intent (NLI) they are committed for one year to the school and the school is committed to one years financial scholarship to the student athlete. If the student athlete changes their mind about attending the institution with which they signed the NLI, the basic penalty is a loss of one year of eligibility.

So... If Florida says - "no" to letting this kid out of his NLI, then he essentially loses a year of eligibility. Bet that won't make him or his pappy happy and can bet that somewhere there will be a lawsuit filed by this kid if he doesn't enroll on Friday.

Hope I'm wrong but the way things have been going for the NCAA in the courts as of late it wouldn't surprise me if some judge looks at the NCAA NLI rules and ends up declaring they are essentially worthless and the kids can break them at will without penalty.

2024 orange level memberbadge-donor-10yr.jpgmilitary_donation.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

That would be the death of signing day and a real shame

Jan 12, 2023, 1:04 PM

....in December or February, go through Spring practice and then enter the portal in May without penalty.

I know there are windows when a kid can enter the portal. I just don't know what they are. I'll see if I can find out.

Jan 12, 2023, 11:11 AM [ in reply to So what's the next domino to fall in the NCAA rules? ]

I guess he could appeal to the NCAA to get released fromnhis NLI but that costs more money for attorneys. In the end, probably nothing gained.

I read comments from FL fans and they were saying FL promised NIL $s and need to live up to it. I didn't see any posts (didn't read all) that said some "new" school offered more and now they want FL to match or exceed the new offer. I hope FL doesn't cave and this turns into is the case that brings about some needed changes.

Wonder if the Lagway QB commit to Fla has anything to do with the NIL deal falling through??? If so that’s hilarious…only so many QB’s can be getting paid millions on one roster…if so then that’s the lessons of it just being business!!! Everyone is replaceable!!!

Re: Florida QB Recruiting NIL Drama

1

Jan 12, 2023, 10:34 AM

You can say that's what he "wants to avoid" all you want. But that is what college football is now. A recruit would be stupid to turn down millions to go to a school that has a better "culture." These are professional athletes. Plain and simple. There's nothing anyone can do about it now, especially after Kavanaugh's opinion. You have to adapt to the times, not hold onto obstinate beliefs that died years ago.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Now long before the collectives start playing games?

Jan 12, 2023, 11:01 AM

School A signs a player to a NIL deal. Tells him to commit to School B but switch to School A on signing day.

Player gets the cash.
School A gets the player
School B is left with a hole in their roster.

This whole environment is free agency with no contracts and no salary caps. They have forever destroyed the premise of a student athlete. They ruined College Football. It's the new minors for the NFL. It's all about the money.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Portal windows.

Jan 12, 2023, 1:13 PM

Just found this.

********
In the interest of making this process more predictable, transfer windows were adopted for 2022-23. The window for players to put their names in the portal is only open for 60 days of the year. At the FBS level, the first window opens today (12/5/22) and closes on Jan. 18. The second window of opportunity to transfer comes at the end of the spring semester, from May 1 through May 15.
*********

So, it looks like to me that he could enter the portal before the 18th and sign with somebody else.

I'm listening to talk radio in Florida now. Here is what they are saying: Allegedly, repeat allegedly, someone offered him a deal worth 13 million dollars (ALLEGEDLY) if he signed with Florida. Now, allegedly, he has been told the money is not there. So, he wants out of the deal.

Now, forget the 13 million dollar number. No matter what it is, the principle is still the same. What if he was promised 400K if he signed and now the collective or whoever is offering the money says, "We changed out mind."

Good update, thanks Bret for this. Agree the amount shouldn’t matter here but in a world with no (enforced) rules, safe to say we can expect more defaults on “commitments” by players and collectives.

Everyone involved screwed this up so bad ever letting it get to the courts. College football has become a sad cautionary tale of greed, arrogance, atrocious planning and gross mismanagement. The Titanic was supposed to be unsinkable, right?

Is the NIL so closely tied to the NLI?

Jan 12, 2023, 9:12 PM [ in reply to Portal windows. ]

I would think it's wrong to make an offer then back out but legally it's uncommon for someone to seek court relief over a broken promise made verbally while the contract signed is on paper.

I hope we don't get so desperate that we have to bid on players then pay them to perform.
