Spent some time in a really small town in central Italy Mirandola which suffered an major earthquake last year. So many of the old building were destroyed. The Italians there are true small town people. We ate like kings. they have starters ( Gnocchi Fritti thinly fried breads with prosciutto ham, salami cheese,olives, grapes) ,first plate (tortellini with butternut squash) , second plate ( meat dish)and desert.
I never made it past the first plate and desert Wash it down with some naturally sparkling red Lambrusco to bring your cholesterol back to normal . FOOD COMA!
If you're flying over from Germany pick the window seat opposite the sun. The Swiss Alps at 35000 feet have indescribable beauty with the sun shining on them.
Too much to tell in a post...The flights are brutal (11 hours in a tin can) plan wisely

See David's statue, THE Cathedral (can't remember the name), etc. Wow, what a great city. Best ice cream in the world at a shop opposite the Cathedral. Enjoy yourself!

I did a Rome- Floence-Venice trip over 10 days in April.
Florence is great! It's a smaller city than Rome, and very easy to get around.
The center of town is near the Duomo ( massive cathedral ). I would head that way & just explore the area on foot. There are plenty of great cafe's, a lot of shopping, and too many art museums. You'll see Michaelangelo's David statue too. It's worth seeing.
I'm not much of a shopper, but I did buy a cool leather belt and a small gift for my gf for a decent amount at a street vendor booth. Like any touristy area, there a places where prices are really high.
You will have chances to walk near the Arno River. There is a cool bridge that has apartments built right into it!
Cross the river and head up to the Piazzle Michelangelo. That place has great views of the city. You should be able to get good pictures.
If I had my trip to do over, I would have spent 1 more day in Florence (and would have done a day trip to see the Tower of Pisa).
You won't have a bad meal over there. That was a great part of the trip.
There is a cool Irish bar in Florence, and that's apparently a popular spot among American college students. There is a Clemson shirt tacked to th ceiling among those from other schools.

Not as bustling and crowded as Roma and its more scenic.
One if the cool things I did while there was go across the river and watch the sun setting over the city on these stairs near an old church.

As when visiting any place, ask the locals. They'll tell you where to eat and what is a must see. I always like to experience the people more so than the sights. The food and people are what make a city for me. But, I've seen enough museums and churches and old buildings to last me a while.
Italy is a beautifil place. Enjoy the trip!

I stayed there for a month. I had a great time.
Let's see, you have to go to a service in the Duomo, that's pretty cool. You don't have to dress as formally as you'd think, but don't be a schmuck.
Cross the Ponte Vecchio.
Buy a real Turkish Kebab. It's quite a bit better than any in the states and honestly as good as most of the Italian stuff.
For a wild night, go to "Space" or as we called it "Spache" night club.

Pick up Dan Brown's new book "Inferno" and read it..........

It's a good read and set in Florence, based on Dante's Inferno. And with all his books at least the places he writes about are factual.
