Fan support will follow consistent success in BB

Jan 17, 2022, 12:43 PM

I remember going to football games in Tommy West era when you could pick your seat. Fans will not support losing programs but will support winning programs. At this time fans consider Men and Woman’s BB as losing sports.

Completely true.

During the same exact years when there were empty seats all over Death Valley, Rick Barnes had Littlejohn rocking and it was tough to get tickets.

Also, you’d see Barnes all over campus and he was much more of a celebrity in the community than Tommy West.

slide back into a Larry Shyatt type existence for the foreseeable future (10 out of 12 type team every year.)

Brownell while not at a Rick Barnes level guy is pretty successful at all the core items that you would want (competitive, scholastic, team character, etc.) He's an above average coach in our conference but the problem is that his ceiling is not very high. He keeps us around mid level every year in the ACC which is great but we all know we probably aren't going very far if at all in any tourney. Not sure why that is. I figured he would've had one or two lights out seasons by now but no..hasn't happened. I assume its star level talent that we can't seem to break through. Our teams are solid usually but not very often does it contain an upper tier level player that can take over close games to get us the W. Its almost like we are always all role players but with no real leader ever.

All in all, Brownell has done really what we all wanted. He just can't get over that hump and put a banner or two up in LIttlejohn. And if he hasn't by now then I'm not sure he will. (when i say banner i mean the type that we put up in little john..like NCAA appearance.)

But Clemson is the type to fire a semi-successful coach and then go get a total dud that we have to dig our way out for the next 5-10 years but hey.. maybe we're all good with change no matter what shade it is.

Guess you missed the sweet 16 appearance and the win in the dean dome

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

no I remember... those were great moments.

Jan 17, 2022, 4:25 PM

not sure they qualify as over the hump but great moments nonetheless. And thats cool if that gives you what you need to be satisfied. One decent run in the tourney in 12 years... i mean...i'll take it but its why fan are continuously disgruntled for the past 5 years.

I've always said, he needs one great recruit to get us to that next level. We just have never really gotten that guy. Had some good ones but not that one "IT" guy. When you have a solid team that keeps you in the middle tier of the ACC. Middle tier is kinda what i hope to expect for us to be. He checks that box. I'm good with Brad. I just feel bad he hasn't produced more high points.

I remember a home game against Virginia in January 2019.

Jan 17, 2022, 4:37 PM

We were coming off of a Sweet 16 appearance in March 2018, which you would think should generate plenty of interest from fans such as yourself who demand big time success before they will support the team.

That game against UVA on January 12, 2019 was our ACC home opener. Virginia was ranked #4. We even had a parade for the football team that ended just prior to the basketball game. You would think we would have plenty of fans at the game, right?

Nope. Not even close to a sellout.

That game against top 5 UVA, coming off of one of our best seasons in program history, on a day that conveniently coincided with a football parade no less, couldn’t even generate fan interest.

Please stop acting like we have a supportive basketball fan base. We don’t. Stop claiming that our fans will support the team if they win. They won’t. Stop blaming the coaches and players for not being exciting enough. Face it, most Clemson fans will use any excuse not to support basketball at Clemson. That’s why we have far more posts here after a loss than we do before a game or after a win.

Offense is admittedly better this year. But no one wants to see 20 points in the first half and 50 points for the game. It’s like he didnt understand that to win you have to outscore the other team.
On a comparative note, Saban finally admitted that defense could not win games any more…you had to outscore the other team. So he changed.

It is awful. That is why all the huge comebacks from large deficits by the others in the games we lose.

We were really struggling in 2019 in games. Losing to NC State after leading by 4 with 20 seconds left and others. Virginia the eventually national champion was blowing people out and fans knew it was going to be more of the same.

If you look closely, you will see that we aren't playing Virginia, but BC.

You will also see Rod Hall and other players who weren't even on our team in January 2019.

That is the picture ESPN uses for every game we play at Littlejohn. It isn't specific to that game. LOL!!

You can post numbers for attendance all you want, but we know that it's based on ticket sales and not the actual number of people who show up. Littlejohn Coliseum was not full for that game. If you were there that afternoon, you would know.

Usually Don't Comment - But

Jan 18, 2022, 7:02 PM

I have to disagree with Judge Keller on this one. I have agreed w/JK plenty of times. But, I totally disagree that CU fans and supporters wouldn't get behind the hoops team if they made a push for a National Championship!

I am not a hockey fan; but when the Hurricanes were making a championship push "it was must see tv"!

Coastal winning the championship in baseball was very similar!

Remember all the excitement SCAR had when Sindarius Thornwell and PJ Dozier got them close. The whole state(outside of Clemson fans likely) lost it's collective minds!

The support for Clemson BB would be far superior to that in which SCAR enjoyed. Why? Because I'm a Clemson supporter and I say so.

Nothing further other than to say: "I strongly disagree with the notion that having a consistent winner would not draw more fans"! As a Carolina Panthers fan that lives close not too far from the home stadium; you can tell when the Panthers are doing well vs. when they aren't pretty easy.
Doing bad: easy to get tickets, sit where you want, only real true-blue fans in attendance or people who are using the event as a marketing tool or social outlet.
Doing Good: tickets are pricey. B/C of high ticket prices many blue collar fans end up watching on TV, game still may be for markething or social setting - but fans are far more into the actual game still.

2024 purple level member flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

If you Build it; "they will come"!

Jan 18, 2022, 7:08 PM

Pardon the Field of Dreams reference(younger people google it).

But, no people aren't going to use their so-called disposable income for a consistent loser! Only the true-blue hardcore fans will.
If you want the "novice fan" you have to be consistent. And you have to win. It's simple.

We can't really answer it and it can't really be refuted because "it's not happening"! I have no doubts if Clemson BB ( men or wimin ) were consistently top 15 that attendance would skyrocket!

No doubt in my mind at least!

Re: Fan support will follow consistent success in BB

Jan 17, 2022, 4:56 PM

This just isn’t true. There are a number of reasons why. It’s one thing to go to Clemson for a football game on a weekend, or for a home weekend baseball series. But it’s completely different for a weeknight basketball game. Unfortunately people aren’t driving from Anderson or Greenville during the week to watch a basketball game. The only increase in support would come from the students but how many of them care about basketball?

I don’t think LJ is ever going to be a regularly sold out arena. For the reasons listed above, even if the team was a “consistent winner”. That is just one of the reasons that makes it so difficult to recruit top level basketball players. They care about their home environment, it plays such a pivotal role.
