Finebaum: Clemson + FSU should go to SEC.

Jan 20, 2022, 12:19 PM

Posted for your entertainment. I think Finebaum is just looking for click bait. Not saying it won't happen, but I don't think anything is gonna happen for another couple of years. I think all the conferences are gonna take a deep breath while they try and figure out what happens with NIL and Portal.

Also never going to happen...at least not until around 2035.

that'll be a heck of a deterrent...you know, the kind of thing that makes people think long and hard before jumping ship. Come to think of it, we remember when the portal had the one year sit out rule as a deterrent, the elimination of which has been a bugbear indeed!

If you double your revenue by joining does it really matter if you owe a portion of that to the ACC each season?

ESPN would pay it to get us in their league.

I kind of recall them only having to pay a much much smaller portion than what was due.

do you think Finebaum brooches subjects such as conference membership movement on his own for trolling purposes or direction from the SEC office. Remember, the SEC was not happy at all with the latest CFP expansion meeting.

The SEC format is a bit like casting for a movie.

Bama always has the lead role and all the bit players kiss the Bama A$$.
LSU has pictures of the SEC commissioner and so always gets a great supporting actor role.
Auburn gets good role as the inept guy who is awarded a win over Bama from time to time.
Florida died in a previous movie and so no longer gets credit.
Georgia will get another staring role in 40 years.
Texas and Oklahoma are new rising stars and will get favorable roles in the SEC movie for 4 games.
No one is America pays any attention to the also ran no name teams who make up the remainder of the SEC cast.

FSU and Clemson Thanks but no thanks to being a new face in an old movie.

Jan 20, 2022, 3:17 PM

No big surprise here. Stinkbaum favors a 12 team playoff with 6-7 SEC teams. The holdup on expansion is primarily the ACC Commish and his only bargaining chips are traditional football powers Clemson and FSU. To take away that power Stinkbaum floats the rumor or plan for those two to go to the SEC. Don’t make it complicated - he’s a very simple-minded fool.

It's a NO from me, Pawl. Notice that he said it AFTER Jim Phillips blocked their sped-up expansion plans.

I am intrigued by it because we would get some better football matchups. I would miss playing some of the ACC teams though - VT, UVA, UNC, GT, BC, and Miami. Would love to see us play some of the better SEC teams. Auburn, Bama, UGA, A&M, LSU, UF, Ole Miss, and Tennessee would be fun matchups.

Georgia, Alabama, and Notre Dame will happily tell you that you don't need to be a conference champion to be in the CFP.

The ACC doesn't do us any huge favors. My favorite scenario is for us to go independent like Notre Dame and play whoever and wherever we want getting back to our Southern Conference roots. I would love some combination of premier ACC team matchups and SEC upper crust games. Still need USCjr at the end of November. This would definitely kill the narrative that we don't play anyone.

There is no way our streak of 10 win seasons stops playing these vaunted SEC teams and we can get a recruiting advantage for having 'SEC' exposure.

I would be shocked if anything like this ever happened but it is fun to think about.

Jan 20, 2022, 3:40 PM

Another often forgotten facet of the 'draw of the SEC' is that they continue to add more seats to the table. The markets get bigger but when the checks come in at the end of the table they get split 14 ways. Soon OU and Texas will raise that number to 16. If Clemson and FSU joined in we would be getting just over 5.5 percent of the SEC loot. As an independent we would be able to control our own financial destiny. Notre dame does just fine with people watching them on NBC and is in the top 5 most profitable programs. I think with the right market and TV deals, Clemson marquis matchups could compete with anyone.

TOP 20 PROFITABLE PROGRAMS - source below
Texas – $92 million
Tennessee – $70 million
LSU – $58 million
Michigan – $56 million
Notre Dame – $54 million
Georgia – $50 million
Ohio State – $50 million
Oklahoma – $48 million
Auburn – $47 million
Alabama – $46 million
Oregon – $40 million
Florida State – $39 million
Arkansas – $38 million
Washington – $38 million
Florida – $37 million
Texas A&M – $37 million
Penn State – $36 million
Michigan State – $32 million
USC – $29 million
South Carolina – $28 million - YOU STILL SUCK

Why does Clemson need to join the SEC? Has it worked out for any of their expansion teams? We need to be taking power away from the SEC not grow it. Texas and Oklahoma screwed up royally imo. Head of their conference in the Big 12 will be in the middle of the pack in the SEC.

Clemson is an SEC school in the ACC. Football could handle the challenge and this would help basketball. Baseball would face a significant upgrade in schedule.

Clemson and FSU: Finebaum should go to He!!.....

Yaknow one day after Joe Namath has died, I expect to see Finebaum doing non-stop Medicare ads every October, November and December.

I wish I could listen to a TV show featuring both Finebaum and Howard Cosell,

I wish Finebaum would do a celebrity challenge of routine physical fitness events against Dabo or Ryan Day.

It would be great if the format of his TV show included guest appearances of players and coaches he has bashed that went like an old TV Wrestling Show interview with a bad guy. You know a coach or player breaks a folding chair over his back.

Can we get Laura what's her name to smash a pie in his face?

Jan 20, 2022, 7:35 PM

want to move conferences. You have a much easier path to the CFP from the ACC. And the other major sports have many paths to the post season, so no need. While the SEC is the greatest all-sports league in the country, it’s super competitive to get through it. Enjoy what you have. It’s good enough

Probably the first time I don't disagree with the old jerk. As the saying goes "Don't hate the player, hate the game.". All I hear is crying about the SEC. The game has changed. The SEC is playing the new game. The ACC is sitting on the sidelines and crying about the new rules. The ACC must make up itsmind; play the new game by the new rules, or become reduced to true second tier. Crying about the new rules is not helping. Play the new game or become irrelevant.
