twice over. Let me 'splain. First, it got amalgamated along with the predominately black school to form one huge (for our size town) public school for everyone, different location. Then, later on, as most of the baby boomers kids had graduated and attendance shrunk, it got amalgamated AGAIN with a school in a town ~15 miles away to form yet a larger school, again at a new location, which is now Lake Marion High School. This happened everywhere, at least in South Carolina. That is why you have all the "Hyphenated" schools.

This happened in the private school sector as well. Here in Orangeburg, there used to be two major private schools, Wade Hampton and Willington Academy. These were, to say the least, bitter rivals, and that is putting it mildly. They really did not like each other. And yet, today, they are one, under the name Orangeburg Preparatory Schools.

So, in just about any case around here, public or private, if you have a favorite high school team, it would have to be an "adopted" one, as the past bloodlines are pretty much extinct.

Charlotte Catholic. They won 4 straight state titles in NC at the 3A level (2017, 2018, 2019, 2020 (2021 spring), and 5 titles in 7 years including a 4A title in 2015 against JH Rose. Cornell Powell returned the opening kickoff for a touchdown in that game, IIRC.

They are jumping back to 4A this season, and it may be a bit of a drop off as it seems by their scrimmages and first game. But the streak had to end at one point, and 4 in a row means a kid starting all 4 years on varsity won a title every single year.

The NC Legislature is stupidly trying to abolish the NCHSAA and using private schools as a scapegoat. Even though, time and time again, investigations have proven that the 3-4 Catholic schools in NC do not recruit for a multitude of reasons (they all require sitting one year if they transfer from a public school, they don't allow students to play sports if they commute more than 30 miles, and there are more kids transferring OUT of Catholic schools to public than vice versa). The state hearings were an absolute farce. There's a lot of disinformation out there about private schools in NC. I really hope the Governor vetoes the bill. I can personally attest as a former referee in NC, that Que Tucker and the NCHSAA (Mark Dreibelbis and others) are consummate professionals. Anytime any of the major Catholic schools win a title over a rural public school, the caterwauling about recruiting always pops up and guys like Langston Wertz at the Charlotte Observer repeat their investigations finding schools like CCHS (and Cardinal Gibbons in Raleigh as well as Bishop McGuinness in Kernersville) don't recruit. Actually, most of the "recruiting" is done at huge public schools like Mallard Creek, Chambers (formerly Vance), some Raleigh schools, and the Rock Hill schools.
