Favorite Clemson Hoops Player? (Purnell Era)

Jan 27, 2022, 11:07 AM

I was born in the '90s (yep, I'm a youngin) and didn't get to experience the Rick Barnes/Cliff Ellis eras, but I started watching Clemson hoops as a middle schooler, during the heart of Purnell's tenure, so my memories of Clemson basketball begin there.

Some of the guys on those teams are still memorable to me today: James Mays, Vernon Hamilton, K.C Rivers, Terrence Oglesby, & Raymond Sykes come to mind first.

So who's your favorite hooper from that era? Mine would have to K.C Rivers, with the sweetest left-handed jump shot I've seen.

Booker ... cause he coined the term "Foul on Booker"***

That phrase gets used so much by me and mine. During my oldest's 8U soccer season any time the ref's whistle would blow my wife would yell "foul on Booker". Folks could not figure out who the heck Booker was.

James Mayes, KC, and TO—- that come back vs Maryland is one of my top 3 favorite wins all time.

Hard to choose between these 3, Vernon Hamilton, K.C Rivers, Terrence Oglesby. That being said, Oglesby was a real gunslinger with ice water in his viens, and fun to watch when he nailing 3's from all over the court.

Trevor Booker but loved them all.

Close after Book:

KC
Cliff Hammonds
James Mays
TO
Raymond Sykes

Loved the diamond and 1 press with Mays at the top of it. Teams were so athletic..

Trevor Booker and it’s not even close.***

Vernon Hamilton was a beast. Dude was built like a running back. Still remember the Duke play where we were down by 3 and they inbounds the ball right to him and he drained a 3. He was a brick layer but a solid player.

Ray Sykes had a decent senior year where he averaged 7 points a game but that was basically it.

My favorite from that era would be either Trevor booker, or cliff hammonds.

Led us to 3 straight NCAA's under Purnell and anchored Brad's appearance there his first year as coach.

Lots of great talent mentioned also that are all rock solid choices.

RIP Demontez.

Still say if Purnell...

Didn't get greedy and the AD had tried harder to make him stay Clemson would have had a program as good as Leonard Hamilton now at FSU. Oh, the possibilities...

Larry Williams reported that Terry Don low balled him and suggested the cost of living in Clemson was lower as justification.

There were a lot of rumors that OP "personal" reasons but they were never publicly aired (like other programs) but it was supposedly linked to a side piece and relocating was some intent to start anew. Again, that was all rumors

That being said, we has some major recruiting misses (either unable to sign or players not developing - Milton). OP saw that he was likely going to be Sub-18 wins the next season and his classes were weak. Sure we had a few decent pick-up but not having a long-career NBA talent bigman allowing his guards to press. It would be akin to 2005-2006 or worse - at best. That and some unrest in the locker-room... man 2010 would not have been an NCAA run for OP.

Re: Still say if Purnell...

OP only had Milton Jennings for one season. Brad had him for 3 seasons. I think OP would have made him a better player. Milton was going to the top of the OP's well known diamond and one press like James Mays.

Shaka Smart was so influenced of that press as an assistant it influenced him to create Havoc at VCU which he led to a Final Four.

Shaka regrets not using that at Texas. Shaka has brought that back now at Marquette and they are playing as well as anyone in the country with six straight win including 3 top 25 wins.

further than Brad took us. You may not recall, but Brad wanted to slow us down for first third of the season. He realized a bit late that we needed to run more and we improved.

As you know I completely disagree on that. Purnell peaked at losing in the first round of the tourney. Talent level completely fell off with misses on Noel johnson, Devin booker, and Milton Jennings. He only had 1 recruit in Marcus Thornton committed. He saw the writing on the wall.

His freshman and sophomores in his last year consisted of Andre young, tanner smith, Devin booker, Milton Jennings, Brian narcissi, Noel johnson, donte hill, and catElin baciu. His only recruit was Marcus Thornton. That is not winning talent.

Lol. OP would have figured it out. Oh, and Devin Booker ended up as a second team All-ACC player. OP was leading for Shane Larkin before he left who ended up at Miami and led them to an ACCT title. He would have gotten more NBA type of players if he was still at Clemson after Trevor Booker was drafted in the NBA 1st round. Brad still hasn't ended up with a 1st round draft pick.

ARE YOU GOOBERS TOTALLY MISSING THE PART THAT OP HAD TO LEAVE FOR REASONS I HAVE ALREADY MENTIONED.

Oh yeah he would have figured it out, huh? He would have gotten much more nba player just like the ONE he had in the 7 years he was at Clemson. And even with that ONE, he couldn't win a tourney game. Sad.

Played pick-up basketball once or twice in my home down (same HS - but I am older) so he get the nod from me. He was unreal with us regular court rats.

Jan 27, 2022, 2:59 PM

For some reason Cliff Hammonds sticks out as one I really liked, although the question made me check his stats...I don't remember that he was so bad at FTs.

04-05: 64.6%
05-06: 56.5%
06-07: 64.4%
07-08: 45.9%

Huh.

And I agree Booker was a fun player to watch.

I was born in the 90s too so I grew up on those guys. Booker had to be my favorite too but I loved James Mays. I remember that game winning dunk he had against GT one time. Does anyone else remember that game?

The game where we beat Duke by about 30 at home might never be topped. Booker about ripped some dudes arm off on a dunk and Sam Perry t-bagged about half of Dukes team on a tip slam. Coach K was ready to head back to Durham quickly that night.
