Farewell College Football

Jul 27, 2021, 1:45 PM

This isn't a particularly original opinion, but with NIL, expaded playoffs, the transfer portal, and potential Super Conferences my fandom of College Football is quickly fading. I follow two sports only with College Football being one and English Premier League Soccer being the other. I'm uninterested in professional sports and now College Football is becoming unabashedly professional.

There's nothing about these super conferences that isn't about money and that just doesn't do it for me. The new CFB landscape won't miss me any, but I'm afraid I'm done. As soon as the dust settles on this wave of realignment and the ACC announces their future plans I'll probably stick around until the new changes are made. Perhaps I've got a few more years (2025?) but beyond that I'm doubtful I'm still going to care.

I know why this is all happening but it still makes me a little bit sad. You can't stop "progress," but you don't have to like it nor do you have to support it.

Rant over :)

I may be in that same boat

Jul 27, 2021, 1:52 PM

My concern is the NIL and the transfer portal will turn a sport that I really enjoy into a free agent market where players are going to the highest bidder.

Sometimes good things fall apart so better things can fall together.

Re: I may be in that same boat

I hate to break it to you, but players have been going to the highest bidders for quite some time. It is just that the highest bidder now will be self-evident and will be able to act with total impunity.

Isn’t College Football becoming more like Premier League?***

Re: Isn’t College Football becoming more like Premier League?***

Jul 27, 2021, 2:13 PM

True...But my history with the PL didn't include the "good ol days" without massive TV contracts. I don't follow NFL, NBA, MLB anymore and that coincided with my growing interest in college sports back when I was younger.

If the super league thing happens in world soccer, I'll likely move on from that too.

Do talk about those good ole days before the premier league. When teams like Ipswich town could finish 5th

Can't say I'm right there with you but I totally understand

Jul 27, 2021, 1:54 PM

I will always be interested in any sport that Clemson competes in, but if conditions change to the point that we are no longer in position to compete for titles, I could lose interest in college football outside of Clemson.

With the way things are currently moving, loyalty between players and their schools means less every day, geography and fans in seats seem to mean less every year, and everything is about the TV contracts. Sound like NFL Jr to you? It does to me. I guess we can look forward to smaller stadiums with empty seats as we cheer for our Tigers to take on the Oregon State Beavers or the Arizona Sun Devils on the road. In the current arms race, being a fan just gets more expensive every year.

Glad my youngest is scheduled to graduate in Spring 2025...

I understand what you are saying. College Football was always a pure sport that was driven by passion and loyalty to your school. With the NIL, I am afraid it will be more centered around players trying to squeeze out more money for themselves. I get that players make schools a good deal of money, but this was always the beauty of college football. If you performed well in college, you had the chance to make your money in the NFL. I have never been super passionate about the NFL, besides fantasy football, because of trades, contracts, money, etc. Loyalty to your school and being proud of the school on your jersey is what made college football great.

I am not giving up on college football, but I am hesitant to believe the future of college football is going to be the same. Hopefully the passion of fanbases and alumni will help keep this sport alive because it is what sets college athletics apart from professional sports.

Right there w ya. I'm a lifelong Clemson die-hard, graduate and for a long time was a season ticket holder.

I will always support and cheer for Clemson, but deep inside it is getting harder and harder to keep up with all of the changes in the sport, and it seems to be totally about money now.

Anyway, I'm sure I'll keep watching, and I love Dabo and what he has done and is still doing, but the fire I once had for it is fading with me, as well. Go Tigers!

It will bring in more new fans to replace any that leave

Jul 27, 2021, 2:29 PM

and then some. Reminds of how people predicted that the targeting rule was going to kill football. Nope. Opposite happened. Popularity skyrocketed.

Ultimately, the name of the game is eyeballs watching football, so this kind of stuff doesn't bother me in the slightest. I don't waste a second worrying about it. It will all get worked out for the better.

Jul 27, 2021, 2:38 PM

I do have faith in the powers that be, and do believe that there will always be a place for our Tigers, but this stuff does bother me...just can't wait for it to shake out. Then the inevitable next round will come.

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Also right there with you. When you count all the ways

Jul 27, 2021, 2:34 PM

the sport has changed just in the past few years, it is remarkable:

1) Players reportedly reaching seven figures in NIL contracts...entire teams being offered contracts to promote businesses.
2) Northwestern tried to Unionize and now a new "Trade Organization" forming to represent football players.
3) Players opting out...first for low-level games...then for any post season game...
4) The ability to transfer and play immediately, complete with a tool to market yourself to other schools.
5) This potential SEC expansion turning college football into a few mega-conferences with no history or common tradition.
6) The playoff expanding to 12 teams...further mocking any of the old bowl games and making big regular season games that much less important.
7) The cost of attending, of course, going up and up and up. And the hassle as well, with heightened precautions and security (how many of us think we'll be gathering at the Paw again?)
8) The politicizing of the sport, and the narrative that college football players are victims that we are exploiting.

It's really remarkable - most of this has really come to be in the past five years or so. My passion has already gone from "season ticket holder who went to a couple away games a year" to "I might go to a game every few years and I watch a maybe 2/3 on TV". Never thought that would happen. I hate it because I now have young kids that I thought I would watch with, but if I'm not excited about it, not sure they will be either.

We'll see how it goes! I worry that the powers that be are slaying the golden goose. They're grabbing a LOT of cash now and will sit around like a bunch of NASCAR executives wondering what happened in ten years. Or not...like you said, can't stop "progress" and these moves might make it the best sport ever. I just don't see it.

Jul 27, 2021, 3:03 PM

I'm right there with you for a myriad of reasons. Sports and especially college sports don't feel the same to me anymore, even with regards to Clemson Football. I find myself enjoying other hobbies such as fishing, hunting, and camping. I cannot stand to see how it is becoming a semi-pro league before my eyes, while simultaneously watching the magic be drained from what was once a beautiful game. I highly doubt I'll tune into much past the Georgia game this year, especially if political narratives continue to be pushed to the maximum. Several years ago I would have never thought I would have reached the point of turning my back on college sports, but as they say "never say never". Rest in Peace College Football, you will truly be missed.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Agreed - there's always softball!

Jul 27, 2021, 3:08 PM

I really got into following the softball team this year. They're a lot of fun to watch. Watched the US/Japan gold medal game this morning, too. Just a fun spot with none-to-few of the trappings of baseball, with players looking forward to the major or minor leagues. These girls play for fun and they have a LOT of fun playing.

I can't believe the NCAA doesn't have some type of limit on how big a conference can be or something. This will get ridiculous really fast and will leave out a lot of the "little guys." A classic case of the rich getting richer and the poor getting poorer. Maybe we can hope for UT and OU to have some historically bad seasons in the coming years! :D

Serious suggestion:

Where do you live? Go find a Div 2 or Div 3 team in your area and become a fan. Or just become a freak fan of your local high school.

I understand your frustration, and share it to some degree. Just pointing out some possible options for you.

People have always made a ton of money off of college football including coaches, AD’s, and a whole lot of ppl in the NCAA. I don’t see why players getting paid would change your view, they are the ones you actually watch

Ha...100% agree. College Football has become a BEAST from a revenue generating standpoint over the past 15 years or so. Now the players are getting a little piece of the pie and some people are upset.

Oh and by the way - coaches have been able to pick up and transfer schools for new coaching positions forever..but people are upset about the transfer portal? it is hypocritical that a recruit must commit to a school for 4 years but a coach isn't required to have that same commitment.

Let the dust settle. This will all work out for the better...especially for the athletes which is the reason we watch this dadgum sport anyway!

The NIL rules make it defacto unlimited scholarships again

Jul 27, 2021, 4:14 PM

so teams with money backers can stockpile talent.

Everything else in this country has been ruined, might as well take college football too.

Jul 27, 2021, 4:29 PM

Yeah, there's a lot of shenanigans going on in CFB, but it's survived a long time and been great for a long time. I know Dabo won't put up with NIL-obsessed players, so I have no concerns about our team. Last football game I watched was still football and still great to watch, so I say there's no reason to freak out yet.
