FAR ACROSS THE MIGHTY ATLANTIC in a field of honor

in Normandy, France, thousands of white crosses mark the final resting places for Americans who paid the ultimate price in defense of our land and our people.

The crosses face westward in symbolic gestures for the fallen, as if thousands of silent eyes gaze homeward. When one visits those honored grounds, the poignancy of the sacrifices is moving indeed.

Today, we honor those who made that ultimate sacrifice throughout our history...in all wars...in all actions...even those upon our own land. As we pay tribute, I believe it fitting that we, also, remember all who now serve or who have served, for each has pledged their lives for our nation.

Over 40 years ago, like so many others I served our nation in uniform. To this day I consider that service to have been a sacred honor afforded to me by the American people, an honor that is an immense source of pride.

Thus, while remembering the fallen, I offer sincere gratitude for all who served or who now are serving.

and Veteran's Day just to tell him I was thankful that a 135lb.,18 year old kid, had one day landed at Normandy and fought for my freedom. Heck, he fought and survived for what my life eventually became when I met his daughter.

Thanks to all past, present, and future military personnel.

Kudos! May God bless those who have picked up a weapon and stood the post, as well as their families who sacrificed time away from loved ones and even the permanent loss of those closest to them. God, please hold them in Your hand and give them peace, and help them know their contributions and sacrifice is appreciated. Let us never forget that freedom isn't free.

I served in the Navy from 1964 to 1972 after graduating from Clemson, and had an opportunity to visit the Normandy beaches during that time. If you get a chance to visit that area, do it. It's a sobering reminder of the sacrifices made by many valiant soldiers, sailors, and airmen. Many thanks to all who have served our country in the military services.
