Faith in your Triggerman.

Dec 18, 2021, 10:10 AM

That is the one thing I hope to see return to our offense next year. It became all too painfully obvious that after a couple games this year, the coaching staff had no faith in DJ's ability not to make a huge, potentially game changing mistake anytime we received the ball deep in our own territory. Passes were not even an option in the playbook. Run, run, run, and if no first down was made, punt the ball away. That will have to change for us to return to the top of the college football world next year.

DW and TL spoiled us but a guy can still be a good qb without being the second coming of them. DJ would benefit with a nice rotation of good receivers and not the "who isnt in the injury tent today" corp he had this year

Definitely could see the conservative calls. I'm not sure now whether that was on Elliott or Dabo. I'm thinking Dabo the more we read and heard from the ones in the know... CTE, Rencher, Shipley.

DW and TL did spoil us. Excellent talent that worked well in our system. So did Boyd. DJ5 is a
QB coming from a different style of play. Look where he has trouble, the intermediate passing... Mostly. He needs touch but that came on. As did his deep ball.

I really wish we'd get a QB coach or change our philosophy. Not sure which. It'd be nice to have an honest discussion about it without being called a Dabo hater or coot. Our opposition is really hitting us over it on the recruiting.

That is true BUT, in D-1 Power 5 FB just this past season, I don't think that DJ would rank in the top 25 QBs in just the Power 5 conferences, and there is what, 60 QBs in the Power 5.

Look at 2nd half of the ND hurricane game where we repeatedly got the ball deep in our territory and just ran the ball. It’s a philosophy not a “lack of trust. “

Thank you. Well said. It's other games too, and not just DJ5. TL games too but fortunately, most of those didn't matter. I'd love to see us and teach our qbs to throw open receivers instead of waiting til it's open.

For "throw open receivers" to happen, the receivers have to know where to go. We didn't have that very much this season ... especially early in the season.

A possible case of receivers not knowing where to go was in the UGA game / pick-six, when Justin Ross had (allegedly) didn't alter his route to cut-off the UGA defensive back. Again, Justin Ross had missed the 2020 season, and was rusty. But after a few cases of when the QB couldn't 'throw open the receivers' then the offensive playbook and O-Coordinator's play calling turns to vanilla.

DJ has had trouble processing everything a college QB needs to process at the speed it needs to be processed. I would have expected the game to have slowed down for him by his second season, but that didn't happen. It also didn't help he played most of this season with his top WR threats standing on the sideline watching the game and his OL didn't do him any favors most of the season.
