Fair Weather Fan

Sep 26, 2021, 8:09 PM

I'm so tired of hearing that people who love Clemson Football are fair weather fans if they make any negative remark about what's happening this season. I gave this a good bit of consideration today because I don't want to be viewed this way and this is how I figured out I am not a fair weather fan but rather a loyal fan who has high expectations and I have every reason to have these expectations.

Let's look at this a little different. I am a CPA and have mostly a tax practice. Let's say you use me to prepare your tax return and you pay me a large fee because I've developed a reputation for saving clients significant sums of money in terms of tax savings...all legal of course! Then your tax return is selected for examination and you receive a very large tax bill with interest and penalties tacked on and you come to me for an explanation and I say well I've done this a number of times and no one has ever received a tax bill like you received...oops! Well the client decides to leave me...Is he a fair weather client????

You can tell me that our Quarterback is the best one we've had since I began coaching at Clemson but I'm going to tell you that on paper he may look that way but when we see him on the field we aren't seeing it and now you are going to tell me I am a fair weather fan...I don't agree.

Can we just think about using someone else in that position?

There is a fundamental flaw in your analogy. We fans don’t write Dabo’s paycheck (or TE’s). The University does and if the administration decides to make a change that is their prerogative. In your example this would be like your client having an old high school friend we’ll call “Bubba” that has a Texas Instruments calculator and google search results for tax returns and stands outside your office with a bullhorn telling everyone how you should have prepared that return. I guess he has the right to do that too but how much should you really listen to this expert???

No flaw at all...I'm not calling for a change in coaching at all. And yes indirectly we do write their paychecks. Where does the money come from except the supporters and people who attend the ballgames. I'm just saying it's okay to expect better from the coaches and asking why can't we try something else because what we are doing just isn't working!

Last I checked, the check I write to IPTAY each year is used to pay these coaches salaries and the players scholarships/stipends. So there is no flaw in this analogy.

Thank you...that's sort of what I was thinking but I graduated in 1981 and thought maybe some things had changed since then.

Its literally not though. IPTAY does not play any coaches salaries at Clemson.

But Imma guess there is no line item for Coaching Staff Salary in the budget

Also, it ain’t all for slides and pizza parties

There’s got to be sone give and take between the state and IPTAY on these monies

Don't know where you got your info but it's completely incorrect. You can lookup public salaries and Tony Elliott's draw from state money, aka the University money, is only $245,000. The entire remainder of his $2 mil comes from IPTAY. Similar breakdown for every other member of the coaching staff.

It’s not that a negative opinion is given. Of course nobody is happy with this year’s performance so far. It’s the arrogance that commenters know more about the issues than the professional coaches who have led Clemson to unprecedented success. It’s the fire everybody mentality. I’ve seen comments to fire TE, Caldwell, Grisham, Streeter, and CJ immediately. Its telling Dabo how to run the program he has built here. It’s blaming play calling and scheme and refusing to acknowledge we are unquestionably less talented at QB, WR, and RB than we have been.

Yes, less talented from other Clemson teams, but NOT less talented than over 100 other teams! This is why coaching and development are so important.
