Facebook Post From Bama Fan Sums It Up

Jan 13, 2017, 6:06 AM

I'll start with the obligatory "Sorry, if Germans". But saw this shared on FB from a Bama Fan.

******
So as we made it to our seats in the stadium, we were early of course, and fast approaching kickoff, the two seats to my left were empty. I noticed that there was an awful lot of crimson surrounding me when two young boys all decked out in their Clemson gear came rushing up the steps. I immediately knew that these would be my next door neighbors for a game that I was certain they would lose.

Slower up the stairs behind them was a man who I suspected was their Dad but was confused because there was literally only two empty seats as far as I could see. I was 4 seats from the isle and was correct when i saw them politely ask the young couple on the end if they could squeeze by. Sure enough, my two neighbors. The Dad had immediately began to give instructions to the two boys about safety and what not to do or say and to behave. Attentively they both nodded and I instantly knew that the Dad was leaving them there unattended.

By this time, he'd made eye contact with me and as I adapted to the situation, it was apparent that I wasn't the only one around me concerned that these two boys (9 and 6 years old) were being left alone, in enemy territory. So quickly to dis-spell the discomfort of him leaving his kids and those rolling eyes around me, I told the Dad, they would be in good hands and that he shouldn't worry about them at all.

He explained to me that they were from SC and that for Christmas, he'd promised his boys that they'd be going to this game and without tickets in hand, had made the trip to Tampa. His story continued that somehow a Bama fan had sold him a pair of club level seats for face value and that now his wife and he would be able to go into the stadium (mom had planned to hang outside of the stadium).

Because of such a good deal, he was now able to afford the boys two tickets and the two club level seats. Good fortune for the whole family allowed everyone to watch the game, albeit the sons in enemy territory.

Now, my first question to Dad was this, why wouldn't you sit with one kid and your wife the other, to which he explained, they are inseparable and do EVERYTHING together and would not have it any other way. Coming from a pretty tight knit family, I got it.

Ok, Cool, two Clemson tiger cubs by me to watch us demolish their team. Again, I assured Dad that they were in very capable hands and I would make sure that their experience was a good one.

Fast forward a bit to the game getting ready to start, we shook hands and made our acquaintances and Dad hurried off to his seat with a big smile and thank you! It was at that point I told the boys that they could cheer on their team but couldn't cheer when something bad happened for or to Bama. As we talked and they informed me about every single player on Clemson's team (believe me they had plenty of knowledge), they began to get comfortable with me.

It was during this time that I took notice at how well mannered they both were, yes sir, no sir, please, and thank you. The anthem and fly over were just getting ready to start and I brought them into a little huddle and explained to them that the people in our military were the reason that we could attend this game and watch it being free. They nodded and agreed and excitedly jumped into their chairs and almost the exact same time, began their salute to our flag. Out of the corner of my eye, I watched them and neither moved, Id bet that neither blinked during the entire singing of that anthem. While the college aged kids behind me laughed and joked and half-way were paying attention to the flag, these two kids never moved.

At that point, I thought to myself, boy, these parents have done an outstanding job! As the game started and Bama jumped out to a 14-0 lead, their faces were extremely disappointed. I huddled them up again, and said "boys, there is an awful lot of ball left to play, its not over". So just those words pepped them back up.

Clemson began to rally and scored and they were right back in it. The smallest one had to go to the bathroom and so did I, so we all three went downstairs. As we got finished, they wanted to get a drink and said that their Dad had given them $10 to buy a large drink that they could share because it had free refills. So I told them that I would buy them each one and to keep their money. Adamantly, they refused and said that their Dad had given specific instructions to buy one drink with that $10.

I told them that I would buy them some food then, to pick out what they wanted. Each of them were beaming with excitement as they decided on what to get the older one explaining the prices to the younger one. They finally decided that they wanted to share some nachos after a quick scuffle about the youngest wanting a hot dog. Needless to say, I wouldn't have any of it and we ended up with 2 nachos, 2 hot dogs, 1 large popcorn, and three drinks.

They were so grateful and you'd think that I had given them a winning lottery ticket. We returned to our seats and Bama had scored again, and sure enough, here comes the disappointment. Again, we huddled and I said again, "boys, there is and awful lot of ball left to play, its not over"

As we got to halftime, and watched the bands, we talked, mostly about Clemson, and they were losing the game but having the time of their lives.

Moving on to the end of the game, I could feel the momentum changing and Clemson getting into the game, Bama's defense was tired and those boys were going nuts. As the teams traded touchdowns, and Bama went up a score, we huddled once more and I said again, "boys, there's an awful lot of ball left to play, its not over".

Dejected both knew they were probably defeated but never lost hope and focused on my words. They got fired up! They got loud! They were the two biggest Clemson fans in that stadium. As Clemson drove the ball down to the goal line and it was apparent that Bama would lose the game, they huddled me up and said, "there's not an awful lot of ball left to play, but its not over"

Of course, Clemson scored and won the game and I wish you all could have seen their joy and excitement. Soon after and with most of the seats around us cleared out, the Dad came bounding up the steps to celebrate with his sons. Pregnant mom was close behind and I stood and watched as they celebrated.

Just before our group left, I told the guys to hold on for a minute and I went down to say congratulations to the boys. As I got there, I saw tears streaming down Dad's face as he hugged those boys. Mom stood by and watched the faces of those kids and she too, began to cry. Both boys ran over and hugged me and said thanks for everything.

I reached into my pocket and handed the youngest back the $10 their Dad had given them for the drink, gave him a wink and told him to put it in his pocket. Lastly, the Dad came over and hugged me as well and was very grateful for looking after his boys.

It was then that I realized, I had gone to the greatest game that Id ever witnessed and my team lost. But it wasn't the teams that played on the field, it was the team of that family that impressed me the most. We lost the game and yeah it sucked, but I couldn't help but think about my son and my family.

I made a vow then, I'll never go to another one without Jack by my side. That is what it is really about. Now, I couldn't even tell you the kids or the Dad's names but what a time we had!!!!! BEST. GAME. EVER. and we lost. ROLL TIDE!!!

Great story...hope it is a true one...even so there are great fans in every stadium and for every team. Go Tigers! I'm sure many Alabama fans saw the emotions of the Clemson fans as they realized we had won. There is nothing like being a Tiger!

Great story! But it's a story... bama fans are nice folks.. but this story is bs.. this day in time you would have to be a idiot to leave your kids.. no matter what.. oh well..southern fiction at its finest..they are nice people and just like us. Hate to say it but I would have called security on that moron for leaving his kids. They need to be at least 16 to leave them alone like that.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

16 to leave alone? That is BS. I can see every sophomore in high school having a baby sitter when their parents go out to the movie or dinner. Really?

That Bama fan is a good man. He could have been aggravated to "baby sit" 2 kids from the enemy but he took the high road and instead celebrated life. Good Man! Plus the fact they have won about 12 (but who's counting) national championships. LOL Proud of this Bama fan.

Jan 14, 2017, 8:21 PM [ in reply to Re: Facebook Post From Bama Fan Sums It Up ]

Agree totally. Who leaves two little boys alone anywhere even if thousands of people are around them? It seems that this turned out good but this person could have walked right out of the gate with them. When will people learn that child molesters do not walk around with signs announcing themselves as such? They are in your neighborhoods, churches and yes even at ballgames.

Jan 13, 2017, 6:49 AM

Daughters sit together in Bama territory, but they insisted. There was a very nice Bama lady there who sort of took them under her wing. As I have said before, the Bama fans were fine to us. Knowledgeable, complimentary...a little arrogance there, but why wouldn't there be?

I never heard the first derogatory word from anyone in Alabama clothing . Not before game, not during, not after-

While I don't know if I could have left mine alone, it doesn't surprise me that Alabama fans took care of these two. They exhibited nothing during my trip that would have caused me concern

That's not the way the story reads because he also mentions

watching the bands at halftime.

Also, who in their right mind would let their 2 kids both under 10 sit together in the Alabama section? One would sit with mom and the other with dad and if they didn't like it then they wouldn't go.

I'm also a little leery of the fact they bought club level seats from an Alabama person for face value at the game. I didn't see a soul selling tickets but I saw a lot of souls trying to buy them.

I'd like to believe it's true but it really doesn't add up for me.

Jan 13, 2017, 8:31 AM

I felt the Bama fans were probably more entertained watching us celebrate like we'd never won a football game before than if they had won the game themselves. Well obviously, we have won a lot of games, but it's been 35 years since we won one THIS big and probably half the Tiger fans in that stadium weren't even born yet to be able to see the first won. I know I'd never seen us celebrate like that before. Go Tigers!!!

I would be hesitant about leaving my kids with strangers but the fact that they were sitting in Club level means the people around them are probably good folks. Hell as much as tickets cost for the most part the stadium was probably full of outstanding people both Clemson and Bama.

That was indeed a heart-warming story. For me, having raised 3 kids, we never even considered letting out kids out of our sight in any crowd. We always had to chaperone our kids, or they did not go anywhere. We would never have let that situation occur.

As for Bama fans, having worked in Bama for 10 years, they are extremely cordial fans. They love their football, but they are not mean to anyone save Auburn fans (and the opposite holds true too). They are pretty much very nice people to be around. My old motorcycle riding buddy from B'ham has not congratulated me yet though, but other Bama fans have. I hope he didn't jump off a bridge on the way back from the game. I asked some others to check on him. I told him CLEMSON would beat Bama prior to the game, which might cause him additional grief.

We have 13 year old twins and a 7 year old. My husband and I had to sit separate and divide the kids b/c we couldn't find 5 seats together. They LOVE being together at the home games, but we would have never left them alone at a game like that! And glad we didn't! The Alabama fans all around myself and 13 yr old twins old were completely wasted and brought in pint sized liquor bottles and never stopped drinking and could barely stand up by halftime. The language was awful and it got ugly at the end when they knew we were going to at least tie or win it. Plus, the bathroom issue. I would never let my kids go to the bathroom alone at a game of that magnitude! Each time we went to the concession stand, I witnessed so many drunks who could barely walk. 13 is old enough in familiar territory and people at Clemson, but not at that game.

My young son and I sat in the Bama section last year. At one point in the game, the sweet lady to my sons left was trying to cheer him up when Bama pulled ahead in the 4th quarter. I'm confident they were people I could have left my kids with. However, can't imagine I would ever do so. In my experience, Bama fans are some of the kindest I've ever met.

Better story if the ages were 10 and 12, or so.***

The inconsistencies in the story can be explained

Jan 13, 2017, 6:24 PM

by the author just getting their fg confused about when it happened. That's understandable, as I'm sure he hasn't watched the replay of the game (as I couldn't last year).

The thing I don't understand is how does he forget the names of the kids that he shared that moment with? That doesn't make sense to me.

This is a heart warming story but honestly I could not get through each sentence without thinking about some guy just leaving a 6 year old and a nine year old alone with strangers for 4 hours.

Truth

I see all the comments questioning the credibility of this story and I am 100% aware that just because I'm saying this, it doesn't in any way validate it, but the guy that originally posted this on Facebook is a very good friend of mine, and my brother was at the game with him. I have no doubt the story is legitimate. Yes, some of the exact details may be a little off because he didn't post anything about his experience until he was back at his home the day after the game. I know that people will still doubt it and me verifying it does nothing as far as credibility, but I just wanted to let you all know that. Clemson played a HECK of a game. You guys definitely deserved it, and congratulations to you all.

Sorry for the TD.

You seem honest so I'll be honest with you. I only TD those who are not Clemson fans. I have giving a precious few TD's in my time here. I have never TDed a Clemson fan no matter how horrible they have trashed our team's players or coaches.

Irresponsible parents...It ended well but who lets there 9 and 6 years make parental decisions for them.I laugh each time I see couples on HGTV house hunters buy a house based upon their dog liking it or not...Plus the parents put a lot of responsbility for caring for their boys on a stranger and except them to be there 4+ hours with no money for food. What does $10 buy you? One Drink! Great ending and wonderfull story but it could have turned out bad!
