Expanding the playoff… your thoughts?

I’m not in favor of expansion, but it seems inevitable. I think that it should not go beyond 8 teams. This would add a 16th game for the two teams playing in the championship game (acceptable IMHO). I would also like to see a disqualification clause that eliminates any 2-loss team from contention (the ESPN article has the audacity to mention 3-loss teams).

Consider this: Under the current/old format, half the teams ended their season on a positive note due to their bowl victory (remember how positive the BCS victory over LSU was for Clemson?). Under this expanded playoff scenario, 11 of the 12 teams will end the season with a loss.

If a playoff is based on Conference Champions plus the top ranked non Champions, there will likely be a 2 loss team every year. I just have a hard time believing that very many fans would be financially attend the 4 possible games their team might play. I could maybe see 8 but not 12 teams. If it ain't broke, don't fi.x it

Then the other four dispersed into the four 1st round games with home field advantage.

Well, there are two ways of looking at it.

On the PRO side - a larger field does creates more enthusiasm

a) If we take the tennis analogy, there are three dominant players right now and have been for the past decade - Federer, Nadal and Djokovic. It would be easy to say that every tennis grand slam tournament should consist of just three guys plus a qualifier. But the actual 128 man field make the tournaments MUCH more interesting; and every now and then someone else does a win a grand slam.

b) I remember that there were similar arguments for not expanding the NCAA invitations in basketball from 16 to 64. I think that expansion has worked out VERY well; even teams like Clemson have something to play for - yes, 63 teams do end the season with a loss.

On the CON side are some of the arguments that you have made. I also agree with Dabo that the regular season will lose some of its luster; every regular season game will not be a playoff game as it is now.

I think that in this case I favor the expanded field (as I did with NCAA basketball many years ago). I certainly would not mind if a two-loss Tiger team won the national championship!
