Every time I think of Virginia basketball, the first name

Dec 21, 2021, 11:46 AM

that immediately comes to mind for me is "Jeff Lamp". He was a shooter who made a living out of jumping into people, so that they could not elevate to block his shot. He was one of, if not the ONLY real reason for implementation of the so-called "Verticality Rule", which outlawed that practice.

Good one 76er. I had completely forgot he was the reason for the rule change. Good to know trivia.

Remember well him jumping into Moose Campbell to “earn” two free throws and beat us. 79-80 season I think.

Yep and as I recall we beat them by about 20 here. Sampson's freshman year. Our frontline of Campbell, Wyatt, and Nance were all 6'10" and gave Sampson fits.

For me it's Ralph Sampson.

Dec 21, 2021, 12:22 PM

Similar to Tim Duncan at Wake, it seemed like those guys played for at least ten seasons.

Sometimes good things fall apart so better things can fall together.

He was a good shooter but not as good as “liquid silk”

Dec 21, 2021, 12:23 PM

That’s the term one of our former coaches used to describe another UVA shooter. Do you remember that one?

2024 orange level memberbadge-donor-10yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Stith or Parkhill?

Dec 21, 2021, 12:53 PM

Can't think of who else it might be. The default answer would be "The Noodle" Ralph Sampson.

Wally Walker

Bill Foster described him that way.

Walker went on a tear in the ACC Tournament in 1976, starting against us in the first round and winning it all!

Yep he’s the one that comes to mind first for me too.

UVA had some really good teams back then, couldn't win it all though.

wouldn't have even gotten into the tournament without beating UVA in the ACC tourney. Then they beat them again in the Elite Eight, I think it was.

for me its John Crotty

Dec 21, 2021, 12:56 PM

that guy was something else. Pure headache when the we would play him.

As much as I pull for Tigers, I feel despair when we face them. I wish this would be a year to turn it around, but I doubt it.

When I think of UVA basketball, I think of Murray Jarman beating Ralph Samspon on jump ball in '83. Dude had some hops!!

Yes Jarman had serious bounce.

into his defender, while dribbling with his back to the basket. Just pushed the guy guarding him right into the lane, then shoot that little turn-around jumper from inside 10 feet. I always thought he should have been called for charging, but he always got away with it!
