ESPN making Heisman Ceremony Irrelevant

Maybe this topic has already been discussed... the 2022 Heisman ceremony has officially been dubbed the smallest audience ever for the presentation.
Per SportsMediaWatch.com, Saturday's Heisman Trophy Presentation averaged 1.65 million viewers on ESPN, down double-digits from last year (~1.85M) marking the smallest audience on record for the traditional December ceremony. Only the delayed, virtual edition in January of last year averaged a smaller audience (1.5M, pending revision).
Anything ESPN touches is turning to garbage. They are promoting the Heisman candidates all season to boost TV ratings of games and lost the public trust in the process to select the most worthy candidate. It's been this way for years and annual TV ratings reflect the watered-down ceremony that exists today.
It's unfortunate for the deserving players and the eroded historical significance of a once prestigious award.

Can't disagree with that statement. The common denominator is "media" whether it is ESPN or individual voters. Lobbying for particular players, storylines, etc all contribute to the media's underlying attempts to influence a candidate's selection.

It's always a big deal. They pretty much nail it most of the time, as they did this year. I think Deshaun deserved over Jackson though. Jackson wasn't unworthy though.

Alabama WR DeVonta Smith won it in 2020. Alabama RB Derrick Henry won it in 2015. Alabama RB Mark Ingram won it in 2009. It's not always QB's but also specifically non-QB Alabama players.
Also, Suh didn't win the Heisman but I'm not sure if you were joking or not.

It goes to the most popular player on the most popular team.
Since when does the best player in any sport MUST come from one of the best teams? Yes, it would usually follow that the best player is on a great team, but look to the NFL at Barry Sanders and Dan Marino or even Archie Manning. Walter Payton was long considered one of the best RBs in the NFL well before he won a Super Bowl - in which he didn't even score. If that had been a college football game and he a Heisman candidate, the story would've been "Payton's team won the championship but he was unable to score, hurting his chances and opening the door for __________."
It's a joke. I don't think any college football fan cares unless the candidate is on their favorite team.
Something else that has hurt the Heisman is that lately, it seems many of the winners have eventually tanked in the NFL or at least failed to live up to expectations.
Agreed with other posters, though - the media in general has killed it. The early voting doesn't help either.

I rarely watch TV anymore. And by rarely I mean the only time I watch it is for football, NCAA tournament, and maybe a baseball game here or there that Clemson gets on.
But anymore, YouTube and sometimes streaming apps are the only things I'll watch. It's just far superior to the lackluster garbage on regular scheduled TV.

I don't think it's a ESPN thing specifically. It's influence of mass media consumption outside just EPSN along with many other variables, such as who has won the Heisman before, football being an uneven playing field in terms of talent disparity against each teams AKA "Alabama fatigue", players throwing up ridiculous numbers against nobodies all year. Heck, I even forgot about the Heisman Ceremony. I didn't even know it happened till after the fact. Not many really care about it anymore. Doesn't help that this year there wasn't very many Heisman worthy games or memorable moments.

Heisman is irrelevant. It's a popularity contest decided in the offseason and the early fall. That Desahwn Watson never won it, the CJ Spiller who had better numbers that Reggie Bush didn't have a shot? It's a joke. Don't know and don't care who wins it.

been revamped years ago to be voted on and presented at season's end.
Further, allowing outfits like ESPN to try to control the agenda tarnishes the award.
Lastly, the honoree IMO certainly shouldn't be someone who thinks painting "F..." someone on his fingernails during a nationally televised game is a good idea, especially if he knows he is being considered for the award.

I think the popularity of college football has gone down in general. Don’t be surprised if this coming bowl season is one of the lowest viewed yet.
I think transfers and the NIL has turned a lot of people off and the NCAA hasn’t done anything to address the problem.
Also (and this may be related to transfers and NIL) but college football has been really down this year. I don’t know who is going to win the National Championship, but whoever does would get boat-raced by the last 5 champs.

Overall, postseason bowl viewership has been trending downwards in recent years, maybe the 12-team playoff expansion will add a level of competitiveness back to the bowl season. Too many unpopular bowls diluted the product.

The trend is to milk everything for as long as possible so they can charge for advertising. Nobody in their right mind wants to watch 5 minutes stretched out to one hour, turning over every single boring rock about the 4 guys. Almost nobody wants to learn about the parents/other family/coaches/childhood of all 4 finalists.
I tune in at :50 after the hour (right before the award is given) and listen to as much as the acceptance speech as my attention span allows. I had to turn off Caleb Williams.

I don't have any stats upon which to evaluate ESPNs profits but my sense is that everything they touch does not turn to garbage. Perhaps a closer Heisman race will make a difference next year...

When Trevor did not get the Heisman I put the whole thing in the rear view mirror. It became obvious it is more about politics than who is the best player.
