ESPN contributed to the death of the bowls.

There’s too many bowls because ESPN needed to sell advertising slots. I think we can all agree on that.
To make matters worse after the Duke game it was a pat on the back to Duke, then immediately went to coverage of the playoff. I remember when the bowls got wall to wall coverage before the big boys took the stage on New Year’s Day. Why can’t that still be the case before the playoff?
Why would the casual fan tune into bowl games when a 9 win season is treated like a failure by the network covering it?

Correct. Had Florida or Missouri won their bowls games, you absolutely KNOW it would have been a non-stop nauseating fawning tongue bath from eSECpn over the incredibly powerful SEC team and how the gauntlet of playing super-tough SEC games week-in-and-week-out playing Big Boy Football in their Big Boy Pants makes them more prepared than teams from lesser conferences.
Unless the SEC team just didn’t want to be there, of course. Then all bets are off.

I agree they talk about and over advertise the absolute hell out of the playoffs to where they don't really give a flying Phyllis about the other bowl games. Thus, makes the other bowls seem irrelevant to the casual fan. It's sad because there has been good or interesting bowl matchups to talk about but just get skipped over.

Yep. Heck I remember our Humanitarian Bowl vs LA Tech getting plenty of air time leading up to the game. ESPN was promoting Woody like he was a Heisman winner leading up to that game.

When the 12 team playoff is implemented, none of the other bowls will matter - except as TV fodder for the holidays.

Yup. It's saddening to think about. But I also think it may be time to reevaluate the criteria to get into a bowl game because there is too many anyways. D1 6-6 teams playing isn't very exciting on paper. I think if it was made to where you have to have 8+ wins to get a bowl berth, it'd make the games much more significant and exciting and kill off the mundain bowl games that flood the network in early and mid December.

There are far too many games nobody wants to watch. The empty stands speak for themselves. ESPN had nothing to do with that.
Certainly ESPN didn't help things by monopolizing bowl season, but the whole thing became a joke once the number got higher than ~25 games. It's now up to 43!!!
Another huge factor contributing to the death of bowls was the CFP, which took the focal point away from the New Years 6 bowls. Now we have 1st round draft choices skipping the big 6 bowls. This also shifted the smaller bowls from 2nd-tier down to 3rd-tier.
The most recent nail in the coffin was the instant transfer portal (aided by NIL). Some guys are skipping out because they entered the portal right after their last game.
Believe me, I despise ESPN as much as anyone here, but let's be reasonable. Over the last 20 years or so, bowl season has been slowly dying right before our eyes. ESPN may have made things worse but they aren't the primary blame.
The final nail will be the expanded CFP that has 12 teams.
The smaller bowls have gradually evolved to be nothing more than an opportunity for coaches to have an early prep for the following season. For some rebuilding programs, this is valuable. For others, not so much.

There wouldn’t be more bowls if ESPN didn’t want them. Bowls used to make $ off ticket sales but now they make money from ESPN. TV is > than ticket sales. ESPN created the ridiculous amount of bowls. If there was only 25 bowls what would they be televising right now? 25 bowls was plenty when there was just basic cable and 1 ESPN.

Hence the part where I said there’s too many bowls. When bowls were considered a commodity a team going for their 8th or 9th win would’ve been given a better time slot. See 1989 Duke vs Texas Tech.

Networks love/need cheap programming
Bowls are cheap programming.
Bowls still pull very sizable ratings.
ESPN / other broadcast rights owners don’t give a crap about attendance.

I’m not sad just a discussion.
Remember when there would be a good game of backyard ball, but someone thought it was a good idea to punt the ball and it got stuck on top of the house? Yeah no matter where you played there was always that one that just had to punt the ball. Hello punter.

This is the most accurate post on this subject. TV wanted a cheap way to buy eyes on during the holidays. More and more bowls was the answer. TV doesn't care how many people are in the stand. They would rather you be in front of your TV set.
