Up-tempo offense resulted in a Shipley 50 yard TD run

Oct 24, 2022, 9:56 AM

Giving Tigers the lead.

2 offensive possessions after that? Back to the slow, “try to run out the clock and not lose” offense which resulted in a punt and a field goal. 7 points on either of our final 2 drives, or even 1 more first down on our final possession, would have sealed the game and we would not have had to rely on our defense to win the game for us, again.

This seems to be a recurring issue - not going for the kill… letting our foot off the gas, etc. This same trend let FSU get back in the game last week.

All that to ask this: Is this a Dabo or Streeter philosophy? Playing not to win, just not to lose. I know it makes for an entertaining ending of the game, but you’re putting unnecessary pressure on your defense. Without the Mickens pick, what happens?

“Entertaining end of game”?

Oct 24, 2022, 10:02 AM

I think it’s time to face the obvious. Dabo owns stock in the local cardiac unit and giving us heart attacks is good for business.

It’s the most obvious conclusion to be drawn and therefore the most likely.

It is better that what we used to get under bowden...

pronounced dead three minutes into the second quarter.

Because if a Tommy team had a bad start, it was going to end badly. If they had a good start... well, it could also end badly. If you ever saw him look down, you just turned the TV off.

I, too, don't like our taking our foot off the gas in these games. Getting a little lead and then coasting is no way to establish nor to reinforce our belonging in the conversation as one of the elite teams in the nation. I never have liked us getting a small lead and then coasting. With the poor reputation of our conference, we need impressive wins to maintain respect and relevance. JMO

One thing is certain...

The time is coming soon when we're going to need to play four quarters of football. And the coaches are going to have to demonstrate the confidence in our QB (regardless of which QB is in the game) to call the plays needed to move the chains and score points. Likewise, the defense is going to show some indication that they were actually did something to prepare for the opposing team during the week... because if we have to rely on half-time adjustments against the top-tier competition it ain't gonna work. We'll be wearing our a$$ for a hat and looking like we don't belong in the CFP again.

I'll say this, and it may be unpopular with some folks who can't face any analysis that isn't glowingly positive - DJU is going to have to learn to make his reads and decisions more quickly. He needs to process what he's seeing on the field better and respond faster. At this point we're better off with a forty-yard 50/50 ball to the boundary than asking DJ to make an RPO call on 3rd and 5. He just doesn't react fast enough to be successful, and let's face it... when it comes to running out of trouble when the play breaks down, Deshaun Watson or Trevor Lawrence he ain't.

Would you have preferred that we took the Syracuse approach?

4 of their second half drives with a lead averaged 2 minutes each.

They continued to throw the ball incomplete and took sacks while leaving tons of time on the clock which meant our offense didn't have to press and could comfortably still run the football until we caught up and passed them on the scoreboard.

It amazes me that in a game in which Clemson won the 4th quarter 17-0 and scored points on our final possession, people on this thread are complaining that we let our foot off of the gas and went conservative.

Take a breath... I'll explain the run plays

Oct 24, 2022, 11:45 AM

Syracuse dropped 8 in coverage with three down linemen for much of the second half. Why risk an interception when a run play will get 4-5 yards?

Make the LBs tackle your big back (Mafah) and pound the ball for as many yards as you can.

Every three run plays equals a first down unless a linebacker misses a tackle or a RB squirts outside for more yardage (or TD).

Our up tempo offense has been amazing all year, we use to run up temp all game every game don’t know why we don’t go back to it. And before anyone says DJ can’t do it, even last year DJ played his best going tempo gives him less time to get in his head.

Wish we would run our offense at a pace of about 75% up-tempo all the time!

Up tempo is definitely better for DJ. Gives him less time to think and he can just instinctively play ball.

Because its smart football...

...you have to protect the ball and burn clock.

This week we were gashing them the whole game running the ball, UNTIL those last two drives where SYR completely crammed the box to stop the run. They KNEW that Dabo/Streeter would be out of their minds to let a Fr QB try to throw a pass in a pressure situation like that. Think of what you would be saying if Cade throws an incomplete pass and stops the clock or worse a pick. Our coaches have to have faith in their team to get a yard or two when we need it on the ground. Sadly it didnt happen, but it was the right call.

The FSU game was completely different. They went to clock management in the 3rd quarter, which I didnt think was the right call, and made many posts that night to that effect.

I get all that, but I STILL believe a simple run fake,

Oct 24, 2022, 12:51 PM

rollout play for Cade with a run / pass option would have been safe, and had potential to be HUGELY successful with them stacking the box to stop the run in that situation. Maybe we are saving it for South Bend, who knows.

We ran the exact play you are describing on a 3rd down late in the game.

I don't remember which of the final drives it happened.

We faked a handoff, Cade rolled out and tried to get Davis Allen open in the flats on a 3rd down.

Cade completed the pass with a defender in his face, but Syracuse defended it very well and stopped Allen short of a 1st down.

This offense excels at two things:

1. Playing up tempo
2. Scripted drives

There's a reason we've generally been much better on the opening possession of the game, and the end of the half/first possession of the second half.
