I would have rather seen Clemson stay around 17,000 enrollment and increase its academic profile, rather than expanding to accommodate more applicants.

Agree 100%.

I know the US News rankings don’t mean a whole lot, but we were solidly among the top 20 rated public institutions for several years in the late 90s and into the 2000s - and seemingly moving up. We are now #31 and falling, now behind schools such as NC State and VA Tech. That should never happen. Georgia (where I got my MBA) is now #15.

Although I like Clements personally, he has squandered a golden opportunity to raise our academic profile with this focus on making Clemson larger. If we’re not careful, in another 10 years we’ll be looking up at Auburn.

It isn’t perfect, but US News & World Report includes the most important metrics

Sep 16, 2022, 9:47 AM

for measuring academic quality.

Clements is a great guy, but he seems more focused on ballooning our enrollment and meeting football recruits than he does helping Clemson University fulfill its potential as a university.

My concern when we hired him was if his experience at West Virginia prepared him for Clemson. The two schools are very different, and at this point I’m not sure if hiring him was the right decision.

but from an academic standpoint, they had nowhere to go but up, and they're still petty bad.

There is no vetting of the US NEWS data. US NEWS asks the questions, Universities answer the questions and NO ONE checks to see who is lying. THAT is a system that is begging to be cheated.

There have recently been some pretty high profile Universities that have admitted to lying about their data. Top Ten Universities.

It’s a lazy system and I no longer believe in it.

Clemson was known as one of the schools that worked (i won’t go so far to say “gamed”) their numbers specifically to move up the rankings (or keep our spot). That emphasis has changed in recent years.

Sep 16, 2022, 6:12 PM [ in reply to Re: Disgusting how Clemson has expanded so much. ]

The primary reason for the drop is that Clemson spends less Than some schools ranked higher even thou our academic profile is better...spending is a major metric for USNWR. BTW, Jim Clements does not get to decide on grow, that is a BOT decision. Statically, the incoming class has as good or better SAT/ACT scores, HS Class rank, GPA than previous classes.

That isn’t elitist, that’s wanting to see Clemson reach its potential.

It isn’t a right as a South Carolinian to go to Clemson. As long as Clemson continues to accept South Carolina residents with some preference, it is fulfilling its mission.

Don't freak out but there is an enrollment cliff coming. Enrollment boomed in the early 2010s because population characteristic but that same population swell is about to go flat. You will see another swell in the mid 2030s. Demographics

Next, if you look around New Jersey is everybodys problem. In VA at my undergrad dorm floor, we had 3 folks from Virginia, one guy (my roommate) from Beaufort SC, and 18 from NJ. That is just the norm. Granted, instate was still 80% but they crammed all the jersey folks into my hall... uggg.

Next, the cost to go instate in NJ is stupid high. $33K per year INSTATE. Clemson is $32K out of state. Any kid from NJ going to Clemson is finacially SMART... and since Thomas Green was also a yankee, I won't hold it against them.

Agree on the general concern of growing too large just for the sake of size. The Bridge program seems kind of vague. However, drill into the facts and data of admitted students. Look at the ACT/SAT and GPA on the 2022 profile. If you have a student applying to Clemson you may be surprised. Also, look at the quality of our graduates. Many go directly into Leadership positions in every industry and they are geographically distributed. I am especially impressed with the recent achievements at the College of Business.

I see you highlighted New Jersey. When I attended undergraduate school at Clemson in the early 70s the state with the highest enrollment after SC was NJ. Guess things have changed very little in 50 years. Back then, the only accredited school for architecture in NJ was Princeton and I wasn't going there. A friend's brother was in the College of Architecture at Clemson and suggested I apply. I did, got accepted. It was a bit of a culture shock but I loved my years at Clemson, both undergraduate and graduate. I've lived south of the Mason-Dixon Line for the last 42 years...
