My keys to THE game: (and a prediction)

Sep 28, 2016, 5:41 PM

On offense: have to connect on at least two down the sideline throws. Ideally one early on to back up their secondary and keep Louisville away from crowding the box.

On defense: do what you did last week, and re establish the line of scrimmage back two yards. Keep Jackson uncomfortable, and force him into a few mistakes.

My difference in the game: Clemson has been here before, Louisville hasn't. We have played FSU, ND, UNC and two orange bowls in three years with a LOT on the line. When was the last big game Louisville was a part of? Our poise and our crowd is the difference. Clemson: 38 Louisville: 33.

What do you think?

Defense: Penetration with a lot of stunt scheme from DTs, both edges set, held and pinched by DEs. LBs in their gaps, crashing when they get the opportunity, covering when they read movement into the underneath and watching the DE's edge for support (tough assignment). Safeties blitzing, CBs blitzing (just not both at the same time). Sell out with 8 in the box to stop the run. Mix up 3-4, 4-3, 4-4 and nickel and blitz from every one of them, changing the point-of-attack every time. Make Jackson throw in a hurry and trust the CBs and maybe a single safety. Jackson's numbers do not look good beyond 19 yards and if we take away the underneath, he will throw picks sooner or later.

Offense: Play ball control just enough to keep the chains moving, kicking the attack outside to the edge and taking risk only when it's necessary. Only run inside after a couple of successful outside runs. Keep the ball away from Jackson and UL's offense for as long as possible. Plenty of zone read, plenty of out-throws to TEs, WR screens, jet sweeps and anything else to run those fat UL D-linemen as much as we can. I don't think they have our depth and the more we make them run, the sooner they wear down and then we can have our way with them.

Bonus: Use the jumbo package from anywhere outside our 30 yard line on 4th and anything less than 3 yards. Grind them to pieces.

If we can do all that, the cats get birds for dinner.

Forgot one important thing:

Make sure Jackson leaves Death Valley as a "Hurtin' Buckeroo".

Keys to the game is can our offensive line block sufficiently for Watson?

That concern is one reason why I said to get the run game to the edge..... it lessens the need for interior line blocking. Once we run twice (or so) on the edge, help the O-line with a surprise inside run - particularly a counter.

We have to run the football and stop the run.

Key to nearly every football game.

There's something in these hills.
