DYI tip...old indian tricks.

Apr 5, 2022, 6:22 PM

A water pump replacement on a front engine front wheel drive car is a monster. It required draining the oil due to the pump sitting inside the timing cover. Of course the water had to be drained, the belt removed and the engine mount on the right hand side of the engine. To loosen the chain driving the water pump the timing chain tensioner had to be removed too. The chain tensioner is similar to the pump cover, neither is difficult to get off but the chances of losing a bolt in the timing cover is pretty good.

The picture is of the area after everything in the way has been removed and just starting to be replaced and reinstalled.

The copper colored all thread sticking out of the timing cover is a bolt of the same diameter and thread count as those which hold the water pump cover in place. It was a spare so I cut off the head and use such as it as a guide and extra hand in places where only one hand can reach. You can't hold anything and install a bolt with one hand. By putting the pump cover on the stud I was able to hang the cover on it then push the cover in place and insert a bolt with one hand. After putting the second bolt in I removed the stud.

If you'll notice the socket looks odd. I put a piece of tape on it with the end of the tape lapping onto two of the six points inside the socket to 'hold,' the bolt in place until it was fairly well seated in the bolt hole.

It took three hours just to reassemble the carp after getting the water pump installed and I only lost three bolts which I replaced out of my junk bolt bucket.

Is it absolutely necessary to remove the timing cover to replace the gasket? Has anyone had any success with liquid gasket instead during Xflow waterpump replacement?

What fluid are you trying to prevent from leaking?
