Drug Ads on TV

Mar 13, 2021, 3:34 PM

Have you noticed the number of ads for drugs one sees on their TV these days. In the past when we got sick, we we went to our doctor who would usually grant us a prescription to take care of our ills. Now, the ads suggest we tell the doctor what prescription we need. But the sad part is that some of the side effects the drug may cause can be much worse than the problem we are trying to solve. If I get to the point where I am feeling bad, I believe I'll take a couple of aspirin, get lots of rest and if I don't feel better in the morning, pay a visit to my doctor.

Never really understood the prescription ads. Usually a doctor prescribes what he/ she feels is best for your condition. Why do I need to see your ads and could prices be cheaper on drugs if you didn’t have a 2 million dollar advertising budget?

Oh well, going back to watching a Cialis ad

I have been saying that for several years

Congress could do us a huge favor by banning those ads- prices could be forced lower and we wouldn’t have to see constant reports on side effects worse than the illness- and next could be the lawyer ads at breakfast & supper time

I’m constantly amazed though by the cute little family back stories the ad writers come up with.

I agree about the side effects, especially "you may experience uncontrollable bowel movements", which begs the question: what must the condition be like if you are willing to accept this as a side effect?

I wish Congress would ban these ads. It was a huge annoyance to have to deal on a regular basis with a patient requesting I prescribe Drug X. If your doctor is so behind the times, that he or she needs a patient to come in with drug information to bring the doctor up to speed, it's probably way past time to go to a different doctor.

Since, the patient can't pick up prescription meds on their own, this is a huge waste of resources that serves to further drive up drug costs.

I use the mute button. I shake my head when they say it can cause constipation and diarrhea.
Almost always the precaution part of the commercial is longer than the pitch.

I enjoy the part where they say not to take it if you’re allergic to it.

Yep, it's right up there with the "rash or inflammation of the perineum may occur" with those diabetes drugs like Farxiga and Jardience.

All the comments here are spot on. The sad reality is that we see these ads because for whatever reason, they end up making more money for Big Pharma. Like they need to make any more money. People see these ads and go to the doc saying they need this pill. Either the doc gives them the prescription, or they go to another doc who does.
But Joe, you are right on about side effects. We are the most over-medicated society in the history of the world, and we have more maladies and medical conditions than ever before: Diabetes, obesity (like that's a medical condition), blood disorders, depression, anxiety, and on and on. It's crazy.

And JS - LOL about being allergic: "Hey Doc, I'm allergic to Cosentyx. Should I take Cosentyx?" I mean, really?

This is the reason that I will never support universal healthcare. Our taxes would be 100% of our income, to support all the hypochondriacs and fatties.

Many ads have gotten to the point where they warrant pay per view audience as well. They've become way to graphic for children.

ago. He was reading the list of possible side effects for an anti-itch (if I umember right) medicine. First time I had ever heard the term "#### seepage". :(
