Drove past the field on Sunday on the way home from oconee

Jun 28, 2021, 2:05 PM

My kids like to play on the statues. Noticed it was all dirt. Is this prep for artificial turf or just getting ready for new sod?
Down here in Charleston, Charleston Southern University has been installing artificial for the last two weeks. It seem to be more and more widely used due to its $$$ economically better maintenance.

Orange turf with purple lines

Was supposed to be a surprise but I figured it would get out sooner or later, I might as well get the scoop.

Also, the slide at Reeves is so popular, they are going to put one on the hill and players will use that instead of running.

I don't see Clemson ever doing plastic grass.
We are cutting edge in Agriculture, and keeping "Frank Howard Field" an exceptional venue will never change.

Wouldn’t mind seeing a season with the end zones painted white with Clemson Tigers in orange like it was somewhere around mid to late 90’s.

Also, who actually got the crown they removed from the middle of the field. Wouldn’t have minded putting it in my yard

That's a beautiful picture!!***

The perfectly spaced orange seat pads is great for my OCD.

I hope it stays grass and GREEN with white lines the way football fields are supposed to be.

Pretty sure it's being re-sodded. However...

Jun 28, 2021, 3:25 PM

make no mistake, there is ongoing consideration/discussion taking place by the Athletic Department and the CUBOT to installing field turf largely due to the high costs associated with maintaining a natural grass playing surface.

Re: Pretty sure it's being re-sodded. However...

It is not like you just install the field turf and leave it alone. In the long run artificial turf is just as expensive to maintain as natural grass fields, and that does not take into the expense of installing the synthetic turf which runs about 850K to a million.

I live in Florida and I drove by Clearwater High School last week and they're installing field turf as we speak. Collier County (Naples area) has a very high tax base and all of the High Schools in Collier already have artificial turf fields including a less advantaged community like Immokalee.

Not sure why these schools go to field turf but many more seem to be going that direction. I understand it very hot when played on on warmer days.

Last time they resurfaced, I am pretty sure the sprigged vice sod. Often schools with limited practice and/or competition fields use field turf...a problem we do not have.

Re: Drove past the field on Sunday on the way home from oconee

Jun 29, 2021, 10:42 AM

I think they may have sodded, but you may be right. Personally I prefer sprigging as you are not brining in another layer of dirt that may or may not match up with the growing medium in the stadium. Of course washed sod is an option where all of the dirt is washed off the sod. I still prefer sprigging. If they were going to sprig they should have put the sprigs in the ground the first or second week of June to maximize the grow-in time. If they haven't already sprigged then I am guessing they are planning on sod.

Re: Drove past the field on Sunday on the way home from oconee

Jun 29, 2021, 10:50 AM

Yeah it will be sod. You’re right in that it’s a little late for sprigs. I also prefer sprigs but you can’t take that chance on such a high profile field.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Drove past the field on Sunday on the way home from oconee

Jun 29, 2021, 11:02 AM

Correct! There would be no problem getting good coverage and it looking good, but the root structure and stability would be not be as mature as you would like. I wonder if they might be using one of the newer Bermudagrasses like Latitude 36 or Tahoma 31. Georgia Tech had Latitude on Grant field until they changed to field turf.

TigerLinks the answer to your question is they are installing 419.

Yeah ..... that's what they are used to managing and is really hard to beat. Everything else around the campus athletic fields is 419.

It’s tried and true. Can’t go wrong with 419. My personal favorite is Celebration.

I like Celebration too ……. a little more shade tolerant ……. but that’s not an issue in a stadium.

True. You seem to know a lot about turf grass. Hobby or career? My career has been mostly in turf grass.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Drove past the field on Sunday on the way home from oconee

Jul 1, 2021, 6:55 PM

Career ..... I've sodded and sprigged thousands of acres of turfgrass the last forty plus years .... or maybe better to say I have specified and observed the sodding and sprigging. I have laid sod before and hand sprigged greens, but it is more fun to watch than do it!

Definitely more fun to watch. Grass has been my career as well. Some people are doctors, lawyers, etc. I’m in grass. Lol.

All they need is about 4 bushel baskets full of common Bermuda grass. Till the field slightly, broadcast the grass, drag it in with a drag harrow and stand back and get out of the way. All these fancy so called Bermuda hybrids came from this grass. It will put out runners 3 feet long in several weeks and impossible to get rid of once it is established. I have some to share with you if you would like to try it!

Common Bermuda athletic turf. Now that would truly be old school.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Drove past the field on Sunday on the way home from oconee

Jul 1, 2021, 7:00 PM

That would be old school. Just about all of the old stand-by hybrids were developed in Tifton, Georgia, many by Dr. Glen Burton, whom I knew. Funny though, one of the early Bermuda grasses used on greens, Tifdwarf, was discovered on a green (6th I think) at Florence Country Club by Monty Moncrief (USGA Green Section representative in the Southeast). The patch of this fine leaf Bermuda was maybe a couple of square feet. From that patch, many many golf greens were sprigged with Tifdwarf over the years.

If I were going with Common Bermuda, I would just seed it ..... about 80 lbs, per acre.

My one and only lawn story. I had a spot in my backyard

Jun 30, 2021, 9:16 AM [ in reply to Re: Drove past the field on Sunday on the way home from oconee ]

which was mostly clay, and was so hard that grass was not growing on it at all, a circle about a yard in diameter. I did the equivalent of what golf courses do periodically to their greens, "Plugging" or "aeration". I drilled a bunch of 3/8" holes about a foot deep with a masonry bit, and backfilled the holes with sand.

Literally within days, the grasses in my yard had found those holes and begun to root. Within a month it was indistinguishable from the rest of the yard. :)

I am sure Clemson does something similar with the sod, to get the roots to go down deep and grab hold.

Natural grass vs. artificial turf

Jul 1, 2021, 10:06 AM

I've played on the "new" artificial turf with the small rubber pellets embedded in the turf. It is very comfortable to run on, fall on, etc. The real issue is heat. I've played on the outdoor training field at the Air Force Academy in the sun. The surface temperature is at least 10 degrees higher than the surrounding air. In September, in Memorial Stadium, it would be a sauna. The field temperatures would be oppressive.

My son takes care of athletic fields at a major D1 university. One of their practice fields is artificial turf and several years ago he came down with viral meningitis. Both he and I are convinced he caught the virus from the field. Have you ever thought about what happens to all of the sweat, spit, vomit, etc. that winds up on the field? If I am not mistaken, every do often the fields are supposed to be chemically treated. Grass for me!
