Don't understand why so many are down on our TEs

Jul 24, 2022, 2:03 PM

Outside of our RBs, I'd say Davis Allen was arguably the 3rd best offensive weapon on the team last year. When we lined him up on outside in 1-on-1 coverage particularly in the redzone, he looked unstoppable. I don't know what his measurables will be as far as speed and strength, but he looks every bit like an NFL caliber TE. I thought Briningstool showed a lot of potential too as a pass catcher. He seems like a willing blocker, but he just needs to get stronger which will come in time. I was actually very encouraged with the group after Galloway disappointed with his play. Am I only one that saw it this way?

Allen, B-stool and Ennis caught just about every pass thrown to them last season that was catchable. Only recall Allen failing to catch one like those. Also think he missed a horizontal pass just above his ankles. Should've targeted them more when the WRs were having so much trouble catching or getting open. There were just two games where they caught more than two passes and two games not catching any, one when the number one rated TE in the country visited. Don't think they had many more targets than catches, but can't find that stat which would be interesting to view.

I’ve seen complaints for years with not using the TE’s in the passing game. We seemed to to use them more when Leggett was here.

Who are the many you speak of? The many think we overlook the position too often but have not seen anyone who thinks the guys are not talented

Actually, haven't seen much negativity toward the TEs. Have seen criticism of the way we use the TEs. Two two tangents aren't necessarily mutually exclusive.

But what I've heard and seen about the upcoming season is the Briningstool may be the bomb.

Very happy your using bomb as a noun rather than a verb. :)

I agree with all of you. It's not that our TEs don't have talent. They simply have not been used very much. I would love to see more passes to Allen and Briningstool down the middle, opening up the field for our wide outs.

Every single Tiger fan with a pulse and brain wants to see a pass over the middle to the TE. With Richardson as TE coach I expect to see it early and often

One of my biggest disappointments last year was Clemson's coaching staff use of their (or rather their non-use of their) TE's in their struggling Offense. I fully expected Tony Elliot to incorporate the TE's into his game plan each week, particularly considering the troubles & Injuries that our WRs were going through last year (not to mention that the TE's were his position group responsibility). Additionally, their experiment of trying to develop Galloway into their "go to" TE went on way too long, considering the potential of the other TE's on the roster. In fact, using two TE's each play could have helped overcome the troubles of both our WRs and our offensive line. The coaching staff has stated for several years their intent to more fully incorporate the TE's into our offense. Their failure to do so has always puzzled me to no end! Come on, Coach Richardson, please use your position group to add some variety to our passing game plans!!!!

The TE dropped a couple of passes, but I think it's the lack of play calling to the TE that has people not valuing them.

I guess everyone assumed if we had the talent like before, we would be throwing to them.

Who has been down on our TE's? I haven't seen anything negative? Galloway didn't progress as expected plus add in injuries. Lay was a giant specimen and never knew why he didn't make the starters list. Only thing I heard was he didn't like to block but thats part of the position. Lay always hade puzzled.

We probably have the best stable of TE's we have ever had at Clemson right now. I don't understand how the Coots have had better TE's than us and they have 2 on the Mackey watch list now. We have totally under-used our TE's since we had Leggett. Not sure why? Our middle of the field with slots have fallen since Amari and Renfro, this seemed to open slightly last year with Allen. Alabama and Iowa have shown the huge values in TEs recently. Look at what Pitts did at Florida, he was their offense basically. We need to open the playbook a little more since TE has left. I think he had an engineering mentality and over-thought the offense and the defensive schemes to point of holding us back on many occasions. Look forward to seeing if we are more open to plays and less vanilla.

Only TE most were down on was Tony Elliott

Jul 24, 2022, 9:17 PM

Because he almost refused to use them even though he was the TE "coach". With all the troubles DJU had last year, he could've bailed out to the TE's a lot and saved many of those sacks and INTs.

We need taller TE's 6'5 - 6'6. It seems we typically go for the 6'2 or so TE. Great for blocking, not so much for receiving

We have had that guy. Lay was 6'5" or taller, plus he was 275lb all muscle, not overweight 6'2" guy. Galloway was 6'4 or 6'5". There was a lack of coaching and playcalling last few yrs. Falls on TE. I really expected a spike in those plays when he took over so he could show off his talents but seemed to be reverse

I really thought Briningstool would be playing more than he

Jul 25, 2022, 7:58 AM

is by now. He flashes the athletic ability every time he hits the field. The coaches must just have more confidence in Davis Allen.

I saw a mock draft that had Davis Allen going in the 2nd round.

has developed to the point he may have a future at the next level. I could certainly see him as a solid #2 TE in an NFL offense.
