Looking at OUs last three games: Baylor, TCU, and OKSt

Dec 26, 2015, 1:40 PM

Oklahoma played well against their best competition. (I'm not saying Baylor, TCU, and OKSt are the best teams in the country, but they were the best teams on OUs schedule.)

1) OU won the turnover battle 9-2.
2) There defense does a good job of getting off the field. They aren't great at 3rd %, but good enough.
3) Baker Mayfield is a player. I liked him after watching the Tennessee game- for obvious reasons. Is Mayfield great at anything? No. Is he bad at anything? No. And he's got what any coach wants- moxy. Mayfield will make some plays against us, and he won't give up regardless of the score.
4) Mixon and Perine are a good 1-2. Both of these guys can hit it given a crease.
5) Their special teams can make some plays.

OU obviously caught a break their last three games, but we have no reason to believe the outcomes would be different. This OU is much better than last year's team. They play with confidence and determination. Credit to Stoops for rallying his team this season.

My keys to the game are pretty much the same as all year:

1) Take care of the football.
2) Make our kicks, limit returns.
3) Block and tackle.
3) Keep DW on his feet.

More OU specific, same as last year:

1) Stop the run.
2) Win first down.
3) Play gap sound/contain. I gotta feeling BV will spy Mayfield on occasion.

Not exactly rocket science. I think OU will watch our film and feel good about trying to run on us. And the other hand, I think OU will cry watching DW and all our weapons on offense.

We'll take the run away by the end of the first, and Mayfield will keep them in it. I think OU will play with two safeties back to force us to check down. My prediction is that OU will make some plays here and there, but we'll be ready. Our OLine has been as good as I can remember. They will keep DW upright, and then start to lean on OU in the 4th. It be close till a late touchdown- similar to FSU- Clemson 35, OU 24.

The thing that gets overlooked is all three of those teams were playing with a backup QB. I think OSU was overrated most of the year as well, but TCU took them to the wire with their backup and Baylor only lost by 10 putting up 34 points.

I feel similar to this game as I did the UNC game, we are the best team defensively and offensively that they will have played this year and I think we win by 7-13 points.

Yep i think they are in for a RUDE awakening-they might have had a chance if we played them right after the ACCCG but with a chance to rest and get healthy and refreshed they are in for an awe-inspiring performance by our guys!

Dont forget that Oklahoma lost Mayfield for last part

Dec 26, 2015, 3:22 PM [ in reply to Re: Looking at OUs last three games: Baylor, TCU, and OKSt ]

of TCU game. The only reason TCU game was close in last half of game was due to Mayfields concussion.

With all that said, I don't think Oklahoma has seen a defense like ours all year. Maybe TN? The game will be won with our defense...just my opinion.

Clemson 38
Oklahoma 21

Still doesn't change the fact that they let a team without their top receiver and QB put up 30.

Brad Brownell: more losses than any other coach in school history.

What do you think happens when your offense goes 3 and out over and over again? Your D gets gassed and they start giving up yards and points. Even to backup qbs who happen to be pretty decent. Somehow south carolina scored 32 on that clemson d!

You MAY be right.

Please, could you tell us ahead of time if the Sooners REALLY want to be in this bowl, or will it be like the last two times we played in bowls, and you didn't want to be there?

I agree with that but to a point. Them playing a team without it's starting quarterback didn't help OU's offense.

We still win and frankly I don't think it'll be as close as some feel. After getting a taste of the Tigers in the first quarter, their confidence will be checked.

Like Isaih Hood for UNC said after the ACCCG... "That's the best team I've ever played....in my life!"

Good assessment. TCU was so injury

Dec 26, 2015, 3:44 PM

Riddled in that game. A lot of folks like to point out they were playing their backup QB. They were and he did not look like a D1 QB at times in that game. He threw multiple deep balls that were "lazy pop-ups" to center field with his receiver covered by two DB's.

Oft overlooked is TCU was playing safeties at LB bc of injuries. I'm not even talking about Safeties the size of ours either. They were playing safeties that looked like our corners at LB. Sure Perine and Co had a field day. It will be a little tougher sledding against our big boy D-line and real D1 LB's. I suspect they will gash is some with the zone plays with those two tailbacks. We've given up big plays all year and I expect they'll find some too. But I don't see them running down our throats like they did TCU and orher Big 12ers. We'll see.

I think a big big key will be effectively pressuring Mayfield and getting him to the ground when we get to him. He is a master of spinning out and making a play after he should've been sacked.

Go Tigers!

Mayfield scrambles around like Johnny Manziel but is not as great of a passer as Manziel!

That's debatable. THis is Mayfield his year vs manziel the year he won the heisman

CMP ATT PCT YDS AVG TD LNG INT RAT
243 354 68.6 3389 9.6 35 76 5 178.9

CMP ATT PCT YDS AVG TD LNG INT RAT
295 434 68.0 3706 8.5 26 89 9 155.3

While you look at this, which is which? Baker is the one on top. Manziel won the heisman because he can scramble like nobody else.

Looks like Mayfield is a pretty good passer if you ask me.

Gotta also look at the competition level-SEC BACK THEN BETTER THAN BIG 12 DEFENSES NOW. Im not saying that Baker is not a very good passer cause he is but JM made some unbelievable throws especially against Alabama.

Yes, he sure did make some incredible plays. Mayfield has a few of those as does Watson. We're lucky.

Where's the rushing yardage?

That's actually backwards.

Dec 26, 2015, 4:28 PM [ in reply to Re: Good assessment. TCU was so injury ]

Mayfield has a great arm and doesn't scramble quite as well as Manziel. He also doesn't have two plays per game where he melts down and either something amazing or something terrible happens.

He hasn't played a defense like ours either.

Dec 26, 2015, 4:51 PM

Mostly because there isn't another defense like ours.

Probably better passer. Stronger arm and better accuracy

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Mostly agree with your assessment. One thing

Dec 26, 2015, 5:36 PM

I'd dispute with you about though. I'm not sure how you feel there's "no reason" to believe the outcomes of their last three games would have been any different had TCU, Baylor, or OKSt had their starting QB. Case in point, 9-2 TO margin when not facing a starter 3 straight weeks. Just my opinion, but you're talking about 3 O minded teams, in an O driven conference, who were never going to rely on their D to win games for them this year. Patterson certainly has the ability to put a great D together as we've seen in the past. This year they just didn't have the pieces in place on D they did 6+/- years ago. Seemed to me TCU was going to go as Boykin went this year...as can be said for Baylor, OKSt, and most any team that loses their starting QB.....much less in the Big12.

Otherwise, I wholeheartedly agree with your assessment. I guarantee you they haven't faced a D front like ours! GO TIGERS!!!!
