Don't understand these top 25 rankings

Honestly, I'm fine with us being the sleeper at a number 5, but I still don't understand how you can place 3 teams we beat last season, all of which were AWAY from home, ahead of us. I get we lost Watson and Williams, plus a few other great playmakers, but we've got hungry guys ready to fill their shoes.

last year is irrelevant. Nothing wrong with #5, we have a lot to prove to a lot of people this year. They won't sleep on us much longer!

I agree, nothing wrong with 5 heck it may be a little high considering what we lost on offense but my goodness that defense is loaded.

But Dabo is the worlds greatest at playing the "us against the world" mentality. So I think it's a great thing. They thrive off of disrespect.

same order from year to year. Every fan chocks up wins for every team they beat last year and then adds the wins they will get from the teams they lost to last year but are better this year.
But sometimes you beat one team one year and lose to them the next year. Funny how that works.

are correct. The real question is why do you have to point this out? Rational thinking folks! We are a different team from last year. We are NOT defending anything. Clemson won the 2016 National Championship in college football. Time to start again...

Literally nothing that happened last year matters, which is why CFB is the greatest game in the world. The turnover of personnel is like nothing else. I think #5 is generous given the uncertainty we have at QB and TE but I think we have the talent, coaching, and drive to turn some heads this year! CFP or bust!!!

And yet where did Alabama start at the beginning of last season coming off a national championship when they lost their QB? #1. Where did OSU start after winning the national championship when they lost their QB? #1. Get DW4 is better than both those guys but come on.

Alabama had won 4 out of the last 7 national championships with game manager QBs, they deserved the benefit of the doubt. OSU won their National Championship with their 3rd string QB, and also returned the 2 QBs in front of him.

But thinking we get Ohio St., FSU, and SC respect. Ohio State was getting their original starter back.

Bama was clearly the best team in the preseason after they won it all. Ohio st did return their starting qb, so I have no clue what you're talking about. Cardell jones started the last 3 games of 2014 and jt Barrett started the rest. Both returned in 2015.
It's not uncommon for teams that won it all the year before ton of start the next year at #1. Clemson isn't being disrespected. We have major question marks, and I'm sure if we played bama game one we would be the underdog.

Think that's part of the point though. 2016, Bama lost Coker, Henry, Kenyon Drake, center Ryan Kelly and right tackle Dominick Jackson on offense, and then all but 1 of their defensive line starters plus Reggie Ragland and cornerback Cyrus Jones, 2 major defense leaders...yet, there they still sat at #1.

OSU didn't lose their starting QB after they won the title.

They actually returned all THREE starting QBs, Jones, Barrett, and Miller (who changed positions).

Population an demographics.
One preseason top ten b1g team has the opportuniry to beat 3 other b1g preseason top ten teams. A mutual admiration group. What does that mean in the final rankings? NADA.
So forget preseason fools gold rankings. They are created by people to predict a future that will make the largest number of people happy. Remember CU and the State of SC are relative small in size.

we lost on of the best college QB's in college football history. Teams don't generally win championships without great QB play. They don't exactly trust what we have at QB. I think they are giving us a lot of resoect due to our D and what we did last year as is.

4 billion years ago it was Yale and Harvard.
Then ND and Michigan
OK and Nebraska
The Real USC and Oregon
tOSU and AL, etc...
It's all BS hype. We're still the dark horse team from Cow Town. But soon we will be the 4th Horsemen of the Apocalypse.

I really think we deserve to be ranked 2 or 3 but 5 is just fine. They still believe we are one of the elite teams in the nation. After we smack Auburn around all the hype will start back up anyway. GO Tigers!

Format is going to suck, but below is the entire list of BCS/Playoff era champions and where they started in the polls the following season. Also one other key bit of information.. whether or not they returned their starting QB the following year.
Only 1 team out of 8 that DID NOT return their starting QB retained their #1 ranking the following preseason, and that was Alabama last year. Teams that did return their starting QB retained their #1 ranking 7 out of 11 years, and were never ranked lower than #2 in either poll.
It's pretty clear that the starting QB returning is the biggest factor in where the defending champs starts the following season in the polls. Defending champs that return their QB are typically ranked #1 to begin the next season, and are never ranked lower than #2. Teams that lose their starting QB typically begin their title defense in the 3-6 range.
BTW, if you feel like we are being disrespected, check out where Auburn began their title defense in 2011.
Year -Champion -AP -Coaches -Return QB? 2016 Clemson ? 5 No 2015 Alabama 1 1 No 2014 Ohio State 1 1 Yes 2013 Florida State 1 1 Yes 2012 Alabama 1 1 Yes 2011 Alabama 2 2 Yes 2010 Auburn 23 19 No 2009 Alabama 1 1 Yes 2008 Florida 1 1 Yes 2007 LSU 7 6 No 2006 Florida 6 3 No 2005 Texas 3 2 No 2004 USC 1 1 Yes 2003 LSU 4 3 No 2002 Ohio State 2 2 Yes 2001 Miami 1 1 Yes 2000 Oklahoma 3 3 No 1999 Florida State 2 2 Yes 1998 Tennessee 2 2 Yes
