DominatING vs DominatED. Give me your pair of games that

May 4, 2022, 12:26 PM

you would consider to be the best examples of each, when it comes to Clemson football. I have a couple, which are the most in either direction. My two picks may not be first on most peoples radar, but, to me, these stand out.

Dominating: 1989's 45-0 rout of the Capons. Sure, there have been higher point totals in other games, but this was TOTAL DOMINATION. Danny's defense held the Ellis-less Gamecocks to 155 yards of total offense. The closest they came to scoring was one missed 47 yard FG in the 2nd Quarter. Meanwhile, Clemson did pretty much anything they wanted to on offense.

Dominated: Again, this one probably wouldn't be most people's first choice. But, to me, the 55-15 DRUBBING that Texas Tech put on us in the 2002 Tangerine Bowl stands out. Poor Charlie Whitehurst got physically abused by the Tech defense all day. If anyone ever doubted Clipboard Jesus toughness, that doubt was removed in this game. He got hit a season's worth of times in one game, but kept getting back up to soldier on. He actually threw for over 300 yards, but you couldn't prove it on the scoreboard. The Red Raider defense stopped us when it mattered, all game long. Meanwhile, we had no answer for Kliff Kingsbury and the potent TT offense. Tech had 555 yards of total offense, and frankly, it could have been much worse, had they desired it.

Honorable Mentions. Dominating: 63-17 or 56-7 against the Coots. Never Again, again and again and again.

Honorable Mention. Dominated: 51-14 FSU in 2013. It still grates on me every time I think of Crusty Crab Legs smug pregame speech, "We ain't leaving here without a VICTORY!" And then, he goes out and put up a Heisman building block performance in our own Death Valley to back that up. We were coming off the seminal "4th and 16" bowl game win over LSU at the end of the previous season, and thought we were ready to ascend to the national stage. The Criminoles showed us that day that we were not quite there yet.

PS, I forgot to mention. In that Texas Tech debacle in 2002, they had an aggravating gnat of a receiver named Wes Welker. Wonder whatever happened to that Dood?

Dominating: 27-7 win over West Virginia in the 1989 Gator Bowl. Major Harris had no answer for Kirkland, Johnson, Brewster, Simmons, McDaniel, and McGlockton.

Dominated: 30-0 loss to Georgia to open the 2003 season.

Dominated: WVU pounds Clemson 70-33 in Orange Bowl, but the Texas Tech game mentioned was a beating, too

2008 vs Bama. Dominated. Completely blew expectations.

2019 vs Bama. Dominating. Completely destroyed expectations.

I think we had had a preseason ranking of #8 going into that

2008 Bama game. And, although I was later shocked at how bad we lost, I already had an uneasy feeling going into the game. Feeling like we were overhyped. Man, was THAT an understatement!

Domanating: 59-10 vs. FSU in 2019. Still remember the guy in the upper deck reading his book with his shirt off.
Dominated: 51-14 vs. FSU in 2013.
Crazy to think how one program can go from great to terrible over the course of 6 years.

I never saw Clemson get dominated like they did against WVU

May 5, 2022, 9:42 AM

The first game I was ever like please can we just forfeit early. They could have easily scored 100 on us that night. They had 50 at the half and thats with us actually participating and taking up time in the first qtr. If that that was a Spurrier coaching he would have dropped 100 just to say he did it. It was unreal and embarrassing that it was to such a scrub opponent on a big stage.

Also the Bama opener in Atlanta (2008?) was rough. We were supposedly a preseason top 10 team, bama wasn't ranked in Sabans second year and they trounced us.. but that was an eventual championship winning team so not as bad as WVU.But that bama team road graded our defensive line all game.

Dominated? Syracuse Orange Bowl game against Marvin Harrison, Donovan McNabb, etc.

Dominating? This past year against the Gamecocks as there was never a doubt that Clemson was going to win the game.

Dominating at GA Tech in 2020. Tech fans were complaining that Clemson was running up the score in the second quarter.
Dominated against California in the citrus bowl around 1990. Even though the score wasn't completely lopsided it was the start of the decline of Clemson football.

I’m not gonna take a stab at this but I have to ponder just how impossible it would be for fans of a team like the one in Columbia to pick one game they felt dominated in.

And yes there is a pic:
