the room, I ran to Cabela's for the 3rd time in a week. While in prominent establishment, I noticed a fella with a beautiful Drathaar....Having trained my own Llewellin Setters back in the day, I had to strike up a conversation with the owner. The dog was beautiful, and I said,"The great thing about this breed is that you can train them to hunt rabbits, birds, retrieve ducks, probably even run deer. And the owner said,"Yep, right now I am training him to bark when my cork goes under....."...and he showed me a pic of that dang dog watching with keen interest his owner's retrieve of a topwater plug.....I thought that was pretty cool and worth sharing....

Every dog I've ever had, has become the best friend that I've had over any human friend. Be good to them, and they will give you their doggy love until life ends for them, and they have left me feeling like my heart was going to bleed out from the crushing pain of them being gone from my life!!!

day of bird hunting. I mean, we humped it...and my dogs probably ran 3 times that much. One of my favorite parts of the day was when I would let one sit in the front seat with me on the way home and they would lay their head in my lap...and boys, I rarely drove a quarter mile before they were sound asleep....For those of you who never bird hunted, you just cannot imagine the feeling you get when a dog you trained, finds birds, holds birds, AND THEN RETRIEVES THE BIRDS. And when you have hunted with the same dogs for a long time, they speak to you. I mean, you can tell when they are ON BIRDS and when maybe the birds had been there but are gone or maybe, when it is just something they are not sure about, LIKE A BUNCH OF DANG CHIKKENS down in a thick ditch they cannot get to....But the best, or maybe the worst, is when they find a big covey or tough single and they have held those birds for 10 or 15 minutes while you were desparately trying to find your dog knowing he was locked down....and you get there, bust the covey and DON'T CUT A FEATHER........and that #### dog gives you a look...I swear I am speaking the truth. Your dog looks at you, or gives you a sideways glance and he is absolutely saying,"Come on pard, I did my part"...You guys that have hunted wild birds a while know what I mean....

Spud, have you ever heard about the Sandlapper kennels that use to be in the middle of Manchester State forest between a community called Wedgefield and Pinewood on Hwy 261. Well in my teenage years, I worked for the owner/trainer, George W. Hodge, he was a Professional Field Trial bird dog trainer. We went all over the US doing Professional Field Trials where 1st place wins 10-15K, and George Hodge was one of the Top trainers in the US. He would have 50-75 field trial dogs in the kennel yard at any time bc people brought their dogs to him from all over the US and Canada. And Field Trial dogs are worked from horseback bc you couldn't keep up on foot. I have hollard Point over here judge a many of times bc I was the scout for my handler and boss, George Hodge!!!!

I got the best bird dog in my whole world right now, he’s really my daughters but loves me and just begs to please you. If we have rabbits, goats, quail, turkeys, chickens,, peacocks, pheasants, doves or pigeons get out he’ll go hold them down or bring them back at your command. He loves water and is the smartest dog minus a greyhound service dog we trained we have ever had.

We love our dogs too. We have 6, 2 Aussies, standard Poodle, Bird dog, Great Pyrenees and a Chihuahua.

Or he's on a hard point in an open field, you walk past him, no birds flush, then you look back at the dog and a single flushes from right under his nose and you don't cut a feather"... dog looks up at you like really! Happened so many times. Great times indeed.

dog pointed a single buried in some leaves. I walked up behind him and that bird flushed WIDE OPEN and flew straight back under my dog's nose, between his front legs and right out the back just underneath my dog's family jewels. I swear on all that is holy, THAT DOG THOUGHT HE HAD BEEN NEUTERED! He let out a little yelp...and looked up at me like, DID YOU SEE THAT!!!!

When a dog rests its head on you, it is the highest compliment your dog can give . . .

It simply means he trusts you, appreciates you, and wants to share his life with you . . . he is comfortable with you.

How can you not love a dog . . . especially a working dog?!!!!!!!

I totally know the pain of missing a shot after your dog did his part . . . I swear I think he would have rather me shot him than missed the bird!!!

Absolutely, and the worst thing man can do to his dog, is to beat or kick them bc they don't have a clue what you're doing it for, and it makes them scared of you. I learned that lesson when I was working to help train Bird Dogs. It made so much sense when my boss explain to me why you should never strike a dog for any reason, and I haven't hit one since I was 16 years old!!!

Thanks for the post... This brought back great memories of Mayesville, St. Charles, Elliott, Cypress, Stokes Bridge.. Many places we had access to hunt wild birds....when they thrived. I saw one wild covey last year deer hunting on the farm in Gourdin. The last wild covey I saw cross a road was in Aiken county over I-20.

Want another so bad but after I put my last dog (a great Boxer) down, I’ve been gun-shy. I dog sit for 4 different friends and they all have taken to me readily. I might have to break down, especially since it may be at that point where he/she has a good chance of outliving me. Unconditional love.

It really is TigerJS, and there isn't anything that compares to the way a mans best friend loves his daddy. You can be in the worst mood ever, and they sense it, and they try to make you feel better and they do!!!

Had to put down my Husky and German Shepherd three years ago within in weeks of each other, just about broke me. Couldn't watch animal shows with dogs in them without getting bothered for about a year or two, and wouldn't think about getting another one. It took me a long time to get over that double put down.

My wife knows me better than I know myself. She saw me playing with puppies at a breeder a few months back and decided I need another dog, so she surprised me by getting me a Blue Merle Australian Shepherd puppy. My boy is changing me back into a child again and just love training him to be a well behaved house dog.

So glad you could find another best friend, and I know how hard it is to lose one, and I'm very close to facing that heart crushing pain again with my Rottie. He just turn 15, and their life expectancy is only 10 but, I do treat my dog just like he was a human kid, if ever they show any signs of not feeling well, in the car and off to the vet we go. They are like anything that has a heart beat, they get sick also, and mine will get a trip to his Dr if he does!!!

Again, glad you found another buddy, and hopefully for many many years!!!

Re: Pup in training . . .

Most important thing about training meat dogs, and that's to teach them to hold the point and not flush the birds before you get to them, or walking up to them. Style points mean nothing with meat dogs, but it is a good thing to tighten them up when they are on point.

Also, Pointers are bad for a gland right inside their butt hole getting an infection, just get your Vet to teach you how to milk that gland, they will hold their tail up higher if you do. Usually if that gland has any infection, they will have what's called a droopy/sore tail, bc of that gland being irritated!!!

Man I wish there were still wild covey’s to hunt, not fond of the preserves.

I about shot one of my dogs this morning. I spent three hours yesterday evening setting 32 plants in one of our flower beds. I tried out this organic fertilizer the girl at the garden center talked me in to, smells like chicken manure. Well, I walked outside this morning to admire my work and every dadjim plant had been dug up. I knew my yellow lab wasn’t the culprit so I started calling for “my wife’s” white golden doodle and sure enough, he had black legs and a face full of dirt. I fussed at him and he hasn’t come within 10 yards of me all day.

Y'all got me crying. I recently lost my German Shorty to cancer. Best quail dog I've ever had. We went to Arnett, Ok and found 50 coveys of birds in 2 days. She was in heaven and so was I. Later in her life we got to the point that I really didn't care about shooting the birds, it was about her enjoying the hunt and me enjoying her. She was one solid dog and my best friend. I haven't had the drive to get another and start that process over.
