Weakest ACC in lord knows how long, combined with 3 absolutely inexcusable quad 4 losses and 2 terrible quad 3 losses.
Being left out of the NCAAT tells the story and after the EMBARRASSING loss last night it’s pretty obvious the committee got it right!

There was a lot of talk about the ACC being down this year..

I think we helped prove that argument last night. The 3rd best ACC team just got beat by a Quad 4, at home, in the NIT.

It was a good regular season, and a horrific finish.

Exactly. We were not a bad team by any means. But, if you take off orange colored glasses, our record in any league other than ACC would be much worse. And don’t even get started on Brownells OOC slate.

Not really. Combination of worst ACC ever. Luck of draw in ACC play. We only played - Duke, uva, Miami, unc - once. We got the poor teams twice. (And lost to one). 300+ OOC schedule. Only one real team we played and that was forced by the ACC/big shootout.
When you play lots of cupcake games, you get a bunch of wins.
I think the team had potential. But the record was propped up by playing poor competition.

Total failure. Didn’t make tournament, failed to beat instate rival and then get embarassed in a piece of crap tournament. Zero good came from this year. Which, by the way, looks like 95% of Clemson men’s basketball seasons.

I thought it was a great season by past history standards (except for the Coot loss) but certainly failed in the NIT. We got screwed by the NCAA and should have been in the Big Dance. When teams deserve to be in the big dance and don't get it, then relegated to the NIT, they typically play with zero effort.
In hindsight, we should have done what UNC did and passed on the NIT. Would have been a way to protest the NCAA without taking a knee during the anthem.

We're not unc and we're not too good for the NIT. Some would say we're not worthy of the NIT. Opt out?lol

If the team we lost to last night was close to our level it is one thing. But they did not have a single q1 or 2 win. The best team they beat was ranked 200ish. Any team with a pulse beat them by well over 20 points. Most by 30. So, that is not coming out and being a bit flat. Morehead should not have even been invited to the nit except for the auto invite. Clemson had a 12+ point lead in the first half. So, I do not buy the theory we came out flat. We fell flat.

We came out hot, actually. So much so that their coach called a timeout 90 seconds into the game. That started their clawing themselves back into the game.
We had a 15 point lead with 8+ to play in the first half (29-14). Except for one 3 and a pair of free throws, the final 8+ minutes was a clown show offensively and defensively on Clemson's part. And CBB did nothing to change the situation. The 15-point lead was blown away leaving a slim 2-pt halftime lead (34-32).
Wasn't long after the 2nd half started that the took the lead and never looked back. And CBB did nothing to change the situation.

So, I think the whole Quad 1, Quad 4 crap and NET is stupid. That said, I would call this an okay season. Not good, not bad.
The Good
We came in third in the ACC in both the regular season and tournament We beat Duke solidly We hit 20 wins, which we don't do very much We made #1 seed in the NIT tournament
The Bad
We won those games against maybe the weakest schedule in our school's history We lost against our rival and some abysmal teams Despite this being one of the best teams in Brownell's history, we still weren't considered a top 66 team. We got embarrassed at home in the first round of the NIT by an absolute joke of a school
It's up to you if that's a good season or not. Here are my honest opinions. I think this is near the ceiling for Brownell. His gameplay philosophy is inherently inconsistent. You can get lucky and win some big games, but you can also get embarrassed by teams you should beat by 30. I do not think Brownell is a bad basketball coach. I think he's perfectly average. He's not a great recruiter and has never attracted a top recruit (K.J. was a nice surprise, but was not an elite recruit). I don't like his offensive style because of that inconsistency, and he typically has an okay defense, but not great. That said, I do think we have a very strong history of underperforming with him. We recruit and have the facilities of a top 40 basketball team. He's also paid that much. Yet we only have a couple top 40 finishes in his time here.
For me, I think the ceiling was okay, which is damning, because if we played like we should, we should have had a great ceiling. I'm a much bigger football fan so I'm not clamoring for a basketball title. But I do think if we're going to spend the money of a top 40 program, we should get top 40 results, and that hasn't happened.

like beating Duke, beating NC State three times, finishing 3rd in the league standings after being projected to finish 11th, and winning 20+ games.
However, overall, I think it would be categorized as a disappointing season. Another finish outside the top 40, several head scratching losses, and no NCAA Tournament invitation.

albeit disappointing.
Getting More head during an embarrasing NIT first round home loss equates to an absolute failure of a season.

Putting the entire season together, it felt no different than our .500 record seasons. Our 23-11 record was makeup on a pig.

Absofrigginglutely, it was the quintessential bradsketball season that our administration continues to allow for some befuddling reason.
I hope Neff has the balls to put his boot in brown-Ls behind for making him look like an absolute clown…
