during a collegiate career ? how does this, across the board seem-

Most come in with significant body fat, lose an initial 25 or so during their first year, then hopefully gain about 40lbs of "quality" weight over the eligibility.

Some even lose weight when they come in.

I would say 20-30 lbs on average is a good estimate

But their body make up changes from a fat content standpoint. The guys get or stay big, but I'd bet the muscle mass makes huge leaps.

Yes, this is normal for programs that have an excellent S&C program, along with individual nutrition plans for the freshmen and redshirts. However, it is a given that most cfb programs do not combine those two components well enough to ensure optimum growth. As a matter of fact, a few well known football programs appear to have neither.
