Do you think the Raiders are "slow playing" contract talks

Mar 30, 2022, 9:01 AM

for Hunter Renfrow?

If you check out Raiders webpages and "fandom" sites, all seem to be in agreement that Renfrow is in line for a huge contract extension, since he would be an unrestricted free agent after this season, if not signed to an extension. And, he is the stereotypical slot receiver, ala Wes Welker, for a Coach Josh McDaniels offense.

And yet, other high profile Raider players in similar situations have already gotten paid, like Maxx Crosby.

The Raiders also pretty much broke the bank to go out and get Davante Adams from Green Bay. He will no doubt be WR1, which should not affect Renfrow's value at all. Slots are slots, and boundary receivers are a different animal.

The fact that Derrick Carr is playing at a Pro Bowl type level, and yet also has not been signed to a contract extension, is troubling as well. We have to remember that McDaniels comes from the Evil Empire, a Belichick disciple. If he follows his masters plan, then Renfrow will have to test the free agent market to "get paid". Belichick has a long history of letting players go from the Patriots, rather than give them that "huge" contract extension. The ONLY exception to that over the years was Tom Brady.

We can speculate all we want, but, the simple truth is, if the NFL regular season starts and Renfrow has not already signed an extension, then that means the Raiders are going to let him walk away. And, I honestly do not know how he feels about that. Or how I should feel about it as a fan. Depending on how this season shakes out for DW4 in Cleveland, he could make a plea for the Browns to bring Renfrow in. If you get past playing in Cleveland, that could be a good move. That ball is in the Raiders court at this point to determine "The Slot Machine's" future in Vegas.

Not sure why you are so far out in front of your skies. HR is under contract for another season so there is plenty of time for the Raiders to resign him if they choose. If they choose not to pay him there will be plenty of others who will make him a very wealthy man so I am not sure why you are wringing your hands in March?

He's not wringing his hands or out in front of his skis. He's talking about an interesting topic, as is most media covering the NFL. Renfrow is eligible for a new contract. He just had a huge year and made the Pro Bowl. What will happen? It's a good topic.

Not wringing my hands, and NFL teams have pretty much

made a habit of trying to sign guys they value to a new contract the year BEFORE they hit free agency, which is now.

Hunter Renfrow is going to get paid by some team, somewhere. But, having to find a new team, get used to a new QB, new system, all new teammates etc, would not be preferable. Plus, the Vegas fans absolutely love him. I do believe that fanbase will be upset if the Raiders let him get away.

4 years, $68M is the projection

Mar 30, 2022, 9:36 AM

He's in the last year of his rookie deal and will be an UFA in 2023. He does have only a $2.6M cap hit this season. The Raiders have around $17M in cap space right now. They'll need to pull some strings to do Hunter's contract now, especially if they're trying to give Carr a new contract. But they can defer a lot of that cap hit so I think it's easily possible, if they want it to happen.

Good topic! I really hope Renfrow gets paid. I'd love for that to happen soon with the Raiders. But, it wouldn't make me sad to see him play for a team closer to home.

Actually it is now for the next five months (before the season starts) so as of 03/30 there is nothing past due.

There is nothing past due. That is correct. But many teams elect to extend players on new contracts after the end of the penultimate contractual season and prior to the NFL draft. They want to know what they have for existing players and what needs they should fill in the draft.

Technically, the Raiders could wait until 1 second before the end of the 2022 NFL season to come to terms with Renfrow, AND prevent him from becoming an NFL Unrestricted Free Agent. If they wait until the end of the 2022 season, Renfrow will have completed 4 seasons AND not have a contract and would immediately become a UFA.

If they go that route, and don't sign Renfrow this Spring to a lucrative extension, then I would suspect his agent would advise Renfrow to wait for the end of the 2022 season so he could test the market. The Raiders have an opportunity right now to get a friendly deal. If they wait much longer, the price will go up.

The Raiders have a lot of work to do on their 2022 contracts. I suspect Renfrow will get an extension before August. If not, then he'll move on with a big FA contract in 2023.

I wonder if Renfrow is truly happy in Las Vegas, though. Not the team, the city. He commented that during the draft, he and his wife had LV as the last place they wanted to go. But, after he got drafted by the Raiders and moved there he felt it was a blessing and part of God's plan. It wouldn't surprise me if he's ready to move on and looking forward to having some control in his next landing spot.

Stay out of the inner city of Vegas and it can be a really nice place to live.

And franchise wise, the Raiders are a pretty good team to

play for. Their organization will always at least TRY to put together a winning team. And, past glories show that they at least have a clue how to go about doing that.

Unlike the New York Jets, which I pulled for for YEARS, until they finally just got to be so absolutely clueless that I had to move on from them for my own sanity.

Hunter is certainly a good NFL receiver but his position is not the high profile receiver position of a team. He will be well paid wherever he plays so don't worry about Hunter.

Hunter openingly admitted in an interview not to long aga that he likes running routes his own way and his last two coaches let him do it but with early push back. It will be interesting to see how McDaniel and Hunter gel, because that might have a lot to do with his motivation to sign an extension and stay a Raider.

How much money do the Jags have to invest in a receiver that Trevor would have 100% confidence in catching the ball when he had to have the yards to move the sticks.

I will say that if the Raiders lets Renfrow go without showing some appreciation for working as hard as he did for cheap, I will hope they never hit the jackpot in Vegas, and they lose their A$$ every season, and I hope they get the same bad name they had in Oakland!!!
