Do you guys even know why purple is a school color?

Nov 21, 2013, 8:23 PM

Or wonder how orange and purple came to be? There is some history there to be explored. Nothing wrong with sporting the purple for a special day.

Seems like I've heard we got hand-me-down unis from Auburn's team; since the blue was faded to a purplish tone, it just stuck. Also, http://www.clemson.edu/administration/public-affairs/toolbox/standards/colors.html

Because it did not fade as bad a blue.***

As a rat (incoming freshman),we were given a book to memorize. It contained the Alma Mater, cheers and historical facts. I don't know who wrote it but the story of the colors stated that originally the first football jerseys (more like sweaters) were black and gold striped. However, they were washed incorrectly and the colors bled out to become orange and purple. The team could not afford new jerseys so they kept the new colors.

correct. Heisman brought orange to Clemson from Auburn. However, he choose purple to be slightly different than Auburn's blue. Heisman also named the tiger as Clemson's mascot, which was also brought from Auburn.

I'm glad to finally see some explanation of the history of Clemson using purple.

I still think it should be changed to black though.
