Do y'all remember when dear old FU was a Baptist school?

I recall my uncle, a Baptist minister, giving me the business because I was a Clemson supporter. He said he chose to support Furman because they did things the "right" way, the Bible was "first and foremost" on campus, and Clemson was a "den of iniquity".
Now when I ride down the road and see the big FU signs around...I think of Dear Old Uncle.

They’ve always done things well and that’s reflected in The appearance of their campus, the quality of their grads, and the mutually beneficial town and gown relationship with Greenville. Proud that my Dad was an FU alumnus.

Yes until they left the SBC. Now they tout themselves as the "ivy league of the south." Kind of sad for those of us that grew up around FU. The saddest part is the slow death of the athletic program.

Coming to a party it was normally pretty lame. Occasionally, you got some really wild ones who musta been preachers' daughters.

I never said Furman wasn't, or isn't, a great school. But, I don't think Clemson is, or was, a "den of iniquity".
It would have been an honor for me to attend Furman. But since my father was a METHODIST minister...Duke tried to lure me in with a $250 scholarship. The other $30k was on me!

Is that why FU moved to the new campus?

Naw, back in the early 80s downtown greenville was in ROUGH shape. Like a drunk/unconscious South Carolina fan on the sidewalk hoping to have some good news on the "test" while leaking more fluids than even their own medical school would allow a cadaver.
They bailed...
Then some downtown business folks, some Clemson urban planners, and the right mindset clawed downtown Greenville back into shape. I remember 20+ years ago thinking they had a real chance... which was shocking to those that had been working on it since the late 80s.

Absolutely nothing wrong with a Christian school. I graduated from one and my sister graduated from Furman. For those of you who have never attended one but are trying to describe, you are totally in left field.

Main St was a ghost town. Did enjoy a Clemson afternoon game then swinging by Sirrine Stadium to catch the dins at night though. And Ckemson/Furman basketball games in the 70's when both were good at the Brown Box were great

I would have gone there instead of Clemson if I could have afforded it. Love Furman. Doesn’t matter if they are baptist or not…
