Do u have a record player ?

Jun 14, 2022, 4:37 PM

Have yall noticed how records have made a come back?
Vinyl sales were over $1 billion last year. At one point records almost disappeared. I have over a thousand, have not bought one in a while.

CDs are down to $584 million. I have over a thousand, have not bought one in a while.

Streaming brought in $12.4 billion. I never stream.

I mostly play files I own that are stored on my computer. A quick check shows 69,833 but there are duplicates in different albums. Mine are not randon junk, just older tunes I like. I only collect albums. They are not in crap .mp3 but lossless .flac or .wav.

I may have more experience with records than the expert at your local high end gear store because I am very old.

Here is the main deal if you want records to sound great --> you must have a record washer. A decent one is about $500. Even before you play a new record, you need to wash it. If you don't invest in a vacuum type record washer you will be unhappy.

These days you can drop $50K and more on a record player. You can drop over 10K on just the needle.

I have two players. One is for stuff found at a yard sales as I don't put scratched records on my main TT.
Years back bought a used REGA and upgraded the platter, the belt, and the sub platter. My needle is the lowly Rega Exact 2 which can be found for under $700. My TT system sounds great!

I have an external quartz power supply that insures the table turns rpms perfectly.

I have a phono amp that cost more than my Bride.

Better audio is not one piece of gear but the entire system.

What’s the rest of your system? I sold off my Naim system and Dynaudio Contour 30 speakers and settled for Hegel R?st and Dynaudio Excite 34 speakers. Got tired of the Naim upgrade train and too many boxes. Plus my most enjoyable experience was with the lowly Naim XS2. The Hegel I have now is very similar to me. Easy to listen to and one box. I use an Auralic Aries Mini for streaming, Rega P3 TT and Oppo 93 for CDs. Nordstrom Blue Heaven cables just because I bought them used and they were cheap. Overall I’m satisfied with the system. Haven’t upgraded anything in 2 years. Doesn’t sound as refined as my previous much more expensive setup but it is just as enjoyable to listen to.

I don't have one, but plan to buy one, and also a tube amp. I'll most likely hold off until I move, which I hope to do in the next 3 to 12 months. I'm wishing now that I had kept the few records that I bought when I was young.

This was the first album I bought as a grade schooler. Bought it from a grocery store called Family Mart in Cootlumbia.

I still have most of mine, at least the ones that weren't still left at home when my parents house burned in 1977. I had just moved out for my first post college job about two weeks before, so some of my tunes were still in my old bedroom at home, and got incinerated.

I look through the album collection from time to time. There are some one hit wonders and best forgotten stuff in there along with the solid gold.

tube amp

Jun 14, 2022, 5:47 PM [ in reply to Re: Do u have a record player ? ]

Along with the return of vinyl has been the return of tubes.
Tubes are on ebay right now well over $10K. Folks claim those from "back when" justify the cost. I don't agree. That makes no sense. Great tubes made today can be had for around $30.

"Tube rolling" is the big deal right now. Folks claim an incredible difference just changing the tubes. I would claim that to if I just spent a thousand on one.

Tube gear is what all new audiophiles must have.
I have lots of it. I have amps and preamps.

My experience is solid state amps are much cheaper and can do the job.

The top tune amps are hand made by Bob Carver and they are not cheap.
I was at an audio retreat where Bob supervised while we hand wired a 20X20 tube amp. Then he would put them on the bench and clean up our work. I had 4, have 2 in a system now as mono amps working at 40 watts. They sound great.

I use his Solid State amps in my main systems as more power is needed (have 2400watts going to to each of my main speakers), and I can't afford tube amps that big.

Jun 14, 2022, 6:04 PM

even old enough to remember another one of those type arguments. Tube amps vs solid state amps, anyone? The "tubists" would argue that the old tube amps put out a "warmer, more mellow" sound.

To me, that argument is like the vinyl vs digital. It will always be a matter of preference.

I will say, without any fear of EVER being contradicted, the digital playback ain't been made that would equal the thumping bass line of the Rolling Stones 33 1/3 speed disco version single of "Miss You" played on my original Ohm F's, being driven by 321 watts per channel (into 5 ohms) of Phase Linear 400 pure power, via a Phase Linear 4000 "Autocorrelation" Preamplifier. It TOOK a great deal of that power for those speakers, but the results were sonic orgasmic bliss, eventually followed by sonic deafness.

Jun 15, 2022, 8:56 PM

The latter part of my navy career I was a fire control radar technician. To give a decent analogy on tubes verses solid state I like to use an automotive reference for those without an electronics background. If you had a ‘73 Chevy Vega it would get up and go 85 mph down the highway. If you had a ‘73 Chevy Corvette it would also get up and go 85 mph down the highway. The difference is one will be pushing it’s limits while the other barely breaks a sweat.

Solid state is limited in terms of power output. You have to essentially keep adding stage upon stage amplifying what you’ve already amplified . In this process you’re going to keep amplifying inherent noise and that gets seen on the end product.

With vacuum tubes you simply get a lot more bang for your bias. It’s not driven as hard and it comes out cleaner.

As for vinyl you will like the sound better because it is a true magnetic replica of the frequencies originally recorded. The sound was recorded in an analog fashion flowing smoothly between frequencies. There was one master made out of copper, I believe and every record was individually pressed on vinyl from that master. It’s a perfect duplicate.

When you convert from analog to digital such as a CD your replacing what originally flowed seamlessly with a digital value. If you could zoom in on the waveform with an oscilloscope it wouldn’t look like a smooth flowing sine wave anymore but tiny little steps in a square wave. You’ve lost some of the original signal in the process and you can never recover it again.

If you’re old and deaf like me you probably don’t sense the difference. But if your hearing is still very good you will certainly notice the difference.

BTW, beware the new pressings of classic albums. Nearly all of them are pressed from digital masters.

Jun 16, 2022, 4:51 PM

Lots of good things for debate in your post, thanks.
Your comment as to pressings from digital are spot on. The same is true for many of the "HD" downloads. Unless they are made from the original tapes, they are no better than the 16 bit and not HD.

One thing as to amp watts is not all watts are equal. Good example is the crazy high watts advertised in car amps that have no real meaning. A good 50w amp can do much more than a poor 100w one. The transformers are everything and why better amps are so heavy.

The sound is different in amps. The mains ones are classified A B or AB. A good trade off can be solid state for power filtered through tubes.

closet along with my album collection. You would turn up your nose at mine, it is merely a Technics turntable with a Shure V-15 Type IV cartridge.

My hearing deteriorated to the point it no longer made much sense to be an "audiopile." My one current decent piece of gear is my pair of OHM F type 2 loudspeakers. Along with a little set of JBL rears and center, and a self powered Infinity subwoofer, my system makes quite acceptable home theater noise. At least once or twice a week, I will surf Youtube listening to live concert music videos, for the most part. Or I'll throw on the Bu-Ray or DVD if I have it. I couldn't even tell you how many times I have seen Pink Floyd PULSE, or Pink Funhouse Live from Austrailia, or Hell Freezes Over, The Dance, Elton 60, etc.

I have found that nowadays, forget "current" pop music, for the most part. Probably 99% of it is pure garbage. Rap, hiphop, whatever it is, it ain't for me. About the only listenable stuff is found these days in modern country, which is pretty much what "Eagles" or "Bob Seger" rock was back in the day.

The best stuff on the Youtube is what I call the "One offs", like some Live from Daryl's House, or duets that only happen on award shows, etc. I still laugh every time I pull up Eric Church and Lizzy Hale's live performance of "That's D.amn Rock and Roll" on the CMT Awards. Half the crowd looked like they wanted to lynch them, and the other half were in awe of Lizzy Hale. Definitely NOT what that ole boy country audience was expecting when they showed up that night!

It may not be in the highest fidelity, but I swear I have yet to search for a song out on the Youtube and not find it. Somebody, somewhere, uploaded some version of it.

And, there are some really talented people covering stuff out there, even just "family garage band" type stuff. Check out "Foxes and Fossils", or the "Mona Lisa Twins" to name just a couple. Also, Lucy Thomas, with her even younger sister Martha dueting sometimes, will totally blow you away with her voice.

The Eagles are the biggest Bastids when it comes to censorship out on the Youtube. They jealously guard their property, even though they are rich enough 10 times over. While I understand where they are coming from, at some point in time, music just belongs to the public domain, per my way of thinking. How much money do you really need?

Jun 14, 2022, 6:53 PM

Before the old Percy family fishing cabin was torn down and replaced, we recovered and saved the record collection my father's family (my grandparents, father, aunt, uncle) had left there. It sat in our basement for fifteen years or so.

Understand that these were not well cared-for, left in a cabin over winters and summers, handled by kids who were put in charge of feeding the stereo system, and played many many times. They are also not *my* music but I have fond memories attached to many of those records (having been one of the kids running the stereo). Virtually none of these are even available on CD.

About 5 years ago, I bought a USB turntable and started converting those records to MP3 format. I had also obtained a simple cleaning kit (not a $500 washer). I carefully cleaned each album and recorded it with the turntable. This is a 1:1 process, so a 40 minute album takes 40 minutes to record and of course I had to turn the album over halfway through). I then used software to remove clicks and pops from scratches, and more software that removed noise. Then I had to mark each song on each album, splitting the one long recording per side into separate songs. Then type in the name for each song, and enter the album title, artist, etc. And then, finally, I could convert to MP3.

It took just about forever (well, just over a year) but I have to convert three milk crates full of LPs. As I got near the end of third crate, my wife said "You know there's still had two bankers boxes of albums in the basement!"

So, that was how I made "Percy Cottage Vinyl, Volume 1". Volume 2 has not been started, and may be a while in the making, but I have started pondering it.

converting those records

---- to .mp3 means less quality sound.

Great tale.
You are right, some albums we like are not on CD.

In the day, made CDs of my Beatle Capitol records with covers and all. It was difficult to do back then, just a hobby thing.
Most don't know (or care) but the USA Beatle albums were different from the English versions. It was a long time before Capitol could get the rights to release CDs of these, but I had them.

As to putting all my records on CD --> changed my mind.
A friend told me better was to play the records on the record player and the CDs in the CD player.

"to .mp3 means less quality sound."

Some are mono recordings, almost all have significant wear and tear, many have significant damage.

MP3 lossy compression is the least of my problems.

I mean sure, if I try really hard on some music I know really well, I can tell FLAC from low-bit-rate MP3. All my personal CD collection has been ripped to FLAC, and also to MP3 for devices that don't play FLAC (like my car). Given the listening environment I'm usually in, say driving, or mowing the lawn, or on a plane, things like that, they difference isn't going to amount to much for me.

It ended up being 2644 songs, off 284 albums. I had bought a stock of 16GB jump drives, which I loaded all the songs onto (so the MP3 was just about right at 11GB) and sent to my older living relatives for Christmas that year. They all seemed to very much appreciate the story and the effort it all took, and were pleased to hear some of that music they hadn't heard for 30 years or more.

Tugaloo,

Ditto for me. Large collection of vinyl and CDs - all stored on a large hard drive. I have downloaded some old 60s and 70s albums that I just can't find anymore. And I am with you on the lossless format - 100x the sound quality.

I still love to put an album on the turntable and do nothing but listen to it from front to back. Good stuff !

I do. Play it occasionally. Mostly listen to something

Does anybody on here remember an "Audiophile" type music

Jun 15, 2022, 7:55 AM

equipment shop near Clemson from back in the day, named

"John Brookshire's Music Machine"? I used to stop in there from time to time, just to listen and drool.

Also around back then were a couple of "chains", "Upstairs Audio", and "Stereo Discounters", which later became Circuit City, if I'm not mistaken.

Went up to picture day in Aug 1978 and went by John Brookshire's. I bought a Yamaha CR1020 receiver and a pair of New Large Advent speakers. Used the Advents (refoamed once and replaced the crossovers) as primary speakers until about 5 years ago when I bought a pair of AR3a speakers which had been my dream speakers since I heard them in 1966! I had the Yamaha recapped in 2020 and use it in the bedroom with a pair of AR4x speakers.

Phase Linear 4000 preamp is what ultimately ended up my original Ohm F speakers. With the unit turned on, and nothing playing, you would hear a noise that sounded like a low wind, increasing until POW, a thunderclap type noise would zap the speakers. The foam surround at the base of the speakers was already deteriorating, and reproducing that sudden capacitative discharge sound was more than they could bear.

I took the Phase Linear to a shop years later, and the tech pointed out about a half dozen solder joints that had vibrated themselves loose over the years. I had him resolder everything, but I never did trust it after that.

Much respect

Jun 16, 2022, 4:24 PM

You must have been wealthy even back then.
Anyone with a Phase Linear 4000 has my respect. That is because I am a huge fan and friend of the designer - Bob Carver. Your refurbed put on ebay would bring $800 which is more thaan it retailed new for. I guess in the day $800 would be a couple thousand now. Sounds like your problem was feedback.
Do you recall the amp you had?
I have at least 20 pieces of Bob Carver gear (Phase linear, Carver, SunFire).

I see your Ohm F speakers went in '72 for $900, but the redesign went for $4000.
According to Ohm's President John Strohbeen, the early production Fs had "functionality issues." "They needed 300 watts to get going, and 301 to blow them up.

AR speakers

I have a lot of speakers, most are in a closet. I have always wanted some AR3a speakers but never acquired any. I wanted them as back in the 60's a favorite book hero was Travis McGee by John McDonald.
Travis had those speakers on his houseboat.

Very nice analog set up!!
I have a Sota Comet with a Shure V15mrx and a Thorens TD126 Mk 3 with a Shure V15 Type IV and Shure M44-7(for playing mono LPs and 45s). I have probably 2000 LPs and 4000 45s.

My daughters are both in their early 30’s. I have hooked them up with tube driven stereo equipment, new turntables because those are just better than the old stuff and big 3-ways. They can enjoy their music and their neighbors down the street can enjoy their music.

They both took after my love of classic rock and roll from the 70’s. I have probably given them both over a hundred classic albums. I tend to find collectors items for them in the original pressings, Led Zeppelin 4 in the ad r rad aoriginal lilac vinyl, Dark Side Of The Moon in picture disc, The Rolling Stones “Sticky Fingers” with the real working zipper….

I go shopping on Ebay all the time and stuff just shows up on their doorstep. I like providing them with the ultimate vinyl collections but truthfully I have an ulterior motive. When I’m really old and one of them has to take me in, the entertainment will already be there in the house.
