These Alabama fans at work are going crazy saying they are #1 when nobody has even played??? Almost as bad as gamecock fans. We are defending national champs period. I understand somebody has to be #1 in preseason poll and that's them but seriously it means nothing. They started there last year as well and ummm...

The first few don't matter as long as you are ranked. Problem is if it takes five weeks into the season to get into the poll you would be unlikely to finish in the top group

Take NC st for example. They are not currently ranked. But if they go through the regular season and only lose 1 game, they would probably be top 5 and going to the ACC CG. They have to play us, FSU and UL. Winning those 3 might move them into the top 3 if they had no losses.

Really none of the polls matter until the cfp committee puts out their first rankings in week 8 I believe

They definitely matter when they determine who gets to play for the championship.
They also matter psychologically when a team plays harder or lazier because of where they are, or their opponent is, in the polls.
