Do guys with #s unretired get a share of merchandise revenue

Jul 25, 2016, 6:02 PM

We know college athletes don't get any merchandising revenue because they are amateur athletes and the number technically belongs to the school. That's why when you buy a college jersey is doesn't have a name on the back of it. However, the few guys with retired numbers, the jersey and number is supposedly theirs and they are no longer amateur athletes. So is Fuller getting a share of revenue from all the #4 jersey's being bought? Will Spiller get money for those 28's?

CJ Spiller has a 4-year, $16M contract because of that #28, not including endorsements beyond that. My guess is no but I could be wrong.

Considering they only make #1 and #16 jerseys...I don't think so anymore (if they ever did).

It looks like schools don't make a huge amount of money off of jersey sales (most of it goes to Nike) and the EA case set the precedent that former athletes could claim likeness fees. I guess one day you could see a school work out a deal to pay the athlete a royalty, but it'll probably be a while.
