Do baseballs have screws in them?

I keep hearing announcers talking about players hitting the ball “on the screws” and have no idea what they’re talking about.

Can someone who has played baseball (or worked at a baseball factory) shed some light on this?

Hitting the ball at the center of the bat, it usually results in a loud crack.

Back in the day, those old persimmon woods would have a faceplate with screws in it. If you ever hit the ball on the screws, it just went a little farther.

Exactly. Nothing like the persimmons. Too bad pros don't have to use them now... Lol and carry an old stiff shaft 2 iron.
