Do any of you old timers remember

Jan 14, 2022, 2:09 PM

The whistle or horn going off at 1pm on Saturday afternoons at the P plant? Maybe it was a siren, I do not know.

Yes! Siren. Not really an 'old' timer but remember that 1pm siren. Attended my first game at Clemson in 1973. Texas A&M. We lost....15-30. Mitch Tyner had an 82 yard punt. A&M had a RB named Bubba Bean.

yep, Rat class 1968 and it was a siren like warning people of an air raid or tornado...

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I don't remember that,

Jan 14, 2022, 3:03 PM

but I do remeber the fire alarm at my local volunteer fire station going off at 12 noon every Saturday. Anyone else remeber that or can tell me why?

Re: I don't remember that,

Volunteer Fire Departments will test their sirens and response times on Saturdays at noon. After returning from Desert Storm and enduring several alarms for SCUD missiles a USMC buddy and I were fishing up in NC one Saturday when the test siren went off. By then it was second nature, we both bailed over the side of the canoe and laughed all the way home. It was a wet ride.

Uh... your right about that. Anybody that would walk out of Sloan Street Tap Room with a gallon of pickled eggs would understand.

Yep, been to many football games in those days but I thought the siren/whistle went off at noon. Football games always started at 1 and the band and students came down the hill from campus at noon.

Fire Station Siren, next to P-Plant.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I believe it was a steam driven siren, because once it

was set off, it slowly wound down, if you know what I mean. This was 1972-76 time frame. I roomed in Old F,, across the street from it.

I grew up in Clemson. Graduated Daniel High School in '85 and Clemson in '89. I remember growing up hearing the Saturday 1PM siren. I don't know why it went off or when the practice/tradition stopped, but I distinctly remember it.

Re: Do any of you old timers remember

Jan 14, 2022, 10:23 PM

It was a 1 pm siren from the P-Plant. I lived in A-804 in '73, and A-904 in '74 - these rooms were right below/above each other and faced West, directly towards the P-Plant, with a beautiful view of Death Valley and Lake Hartwell. I was in "Architecture" and unfortunately missed many a game on Saturday due to sleeping in, but that siren always woke me up, or certainly caught my attention.... I now live in Spartanburg (since 1978), and every Saturday a city-wide siren goes off at 1 pm, as per tradition, regarding the shift change in the textile mills.

I also remember when an acetylene tank exploded in the P-Plant and landed in the middle of the field of Death Valley - no injuries I recall, but the blast was tremendous.

Go Tigers, and keep safe!!!

My freshman year was 1969 and I remember the University Police Dept. making announcements to move your car by 8am on gameday mornings and the Marching Band starting their morning Practice for the game at 8am under F overpass. That helped cure a hangover.
