DL to OL

Mar 7, 2022, 8:30 PM

Has Dabo ever moved a D Lineman to OL ? Since we are thin there and loaded on DL , why not ?

Clemson doesn't care about basketball....as evidenced by Brown-L getting 14 years.

Let’s see, perhaps the current D Lineman are not a good fit for the OL? Perhaps they don’t want to play OL?

I totally understand that. But if I were a third or fourth string D Lineman and could get more playing time by moving over. I would volunteer to help the team out.

In high school the big fast guys on defensive line and slow big guys on offensive line. Maybe we need to double up defensive guys and convert em to offensive guys.

If we weren't so heavy with upper-classmen (i.e., JR and SR) the DL, then maybe one (or two) of the DTs could be moved to OL.

Unfortunately, the under-classmen (i.e., FR and SO) DTs will be very much needed to play DL next year. I can't imagine any of our under-class DTs being moved to OL, but you never know.

DL typically taller to block passes or long arms, they have skinnier ankles which often assume faster feet, typically a little more athletic. The OL tends to be shorter so QB can see over them, they are squattier and heavier typically so they can hold their ground. Tend to be a little more compact but strong.

That used to be the general scenario but it's definitely changing. The stunts have increased substantially, the use of RB's has become less as you can see their value drop in the drafts vs ten yrs ago plus. The OL guys are evolving to be more athletic which probably makes it easier to move guys from DL to OL, but you still see that profile.

I have family in Iowa with family that played at IA Hawkeyes. Few yrs ago I was that their OL coach philosophy (dont know name) was to look for very big TE's or players that used to be TE and turn them into OL guys. Said they were much more athletic typically and didn't carry as much belly jelly. Not sure if true or not but sounded good. Plus if you pay attention to Iowa, they are usually loaded with great OL and the have great TEs. They had 2 TEs go in the first round last year and they might have one this year. Can't remember if he is old enough but they had a good TE this year.

But with TEs and OL going in the draft annually, maybe some truth to what my family told me?

Maye we had hoped to try that with Jaelyn Lay (i.e., super big TE), but since he didn't block at TE there was no sense in attempting to move him to OL.

JJ Watt was a Tight End for Central Michigan when we played them years ago, also a teammate of Antonio Brown. Watt grew into a pretty stout frame and made himself some money!
